Space Neuroscience: A Special Area Within the Space Life Sciences Space life scientists also would like to learn how space flight and microgravity affect the nervous system. This area of research is known as space neuroscience. The study of the ways in which the body’s brain, spinal cord, and network of nerves control the activities of animals and humans is called neuroscience. A particular focus of space life sciences research is seeking answers to questions about changes that occur in the human body when it is launched from Earth’s surface, remains in the microgravity environment of space, and then returns to Earth.
Ever wonder why all this rareified banter on genetics, neurotransmitters, biochemistry, etc. escapes you? (and most doctors also??)
Maybe its time to get back to basics!
This week, Dr Jess Armine will give an overview of basic neuroscience including the cellular structure and function as well as how pathology affects it.
Join us and learn how the brain and nerves actually work...understand this and the way to healing becomes clear ;-)
As always, Dr. Armine's gentle humor and clear explplanations make complex concepts understandable. Join us!

In 2004, Kimberly Chapman suffered two ruptured brain aneurysms and was astounded by the lack of public awareness and sparse research of such a widespread and often fatal condition. Recognizing the need for brain aneurysm advocacy and other types of vascular malformations of the brain, she personally established several international support networks to provide information, resources and motivation for survivors and family members. Kim has created a patient advocacy program inside The Joe Niekro Foundation which offers patients and caregivers educational information along with a huge amount of resources to find help. This mission with the Joe Niekro Patient Advocacy Program is to help survivors realize that recovery is possible and will help patients learn what to expect during the healing process and new coping strategies.
The program is designed to motivate members to follow a wellness plan and to make a difference in the community, while creating a forum of mutual acceptance, understanding and self-discovery

My name is Lori Purdy Faitel and I am a Traumatic Brain Injury Survivor. And I am your host for THE SCIENCE OF HAPPINESS.I suffered a TBI many years ago, when I was 24 years old. As I speak to you I am 52 years old and very happy to share my age. Like many of us survivors of brain injury; I was clinically dead 3 times so…. it is proper to tell that I almost did not live to be 25, which makes being over 50 a blessing!
Back in the day, everything in my life was a dream come true. I was almost 25 years old, had a recent promotion in business which inspired me with dreams for my future, and I was attending college at night, I had recently moved out of my parents home for the first time, I had many friends and I was on the fast track to a future with the man I had been in love with for about 5 years. THEN on a beautiful sunny spring morning as I drove on the freeway to my job; a construction truck dropped bales of hay onto my windshield causing me to lose control of my car. I spun off the road and into cement construction material. From that point forward my dreams were taken away. I was diagnosed with a TBI, in a mild coma for 7 days and it took about 6 years of therapy and extensive study before I was able to function like an adult again. I understand that the world is not filled with happiness; But for an hour or so lets concentrate on things that help to create happiness.
My guest will be Scott Transue “I am a Non-Attorney Representative, so I would like to provide my contact information and website address during the show. I can also offer a free downloadable guide on tips for submitting a successful disability application to Social Security.”
I expect this show to have valuable information.
Historian Rick Perlstein returns to Virtually Speaking to discuss his new book, The Invisible Bridge. Blogger extraordinaire Digby joins us as guest interviewer. RIck has described Digby this way:
My other favorite political writer, Heather Parton, blogs under the name “Digby.” Daily for over 10 years she’s been unleashing a fire hose of brilliance on the fecklessness of the Democrats, the craziness of the Republicans and especially the way that what we now call the “culture wars” has been seared into our national DNA at least since the Civil War. In the acknowledgments to “Nixonland,” I called her the other half of my brain.
We're delighted to have them both here tonight.
