Rice's first full-length movie as director and writer, "Unsullied," is slated to open nationwide Friday.
"It's a classic," Rice said, in typical understated style. "The lead character ... goes on a journey into the great unknown."
The lead actress of "Unsullied," Murray Gray, was chosen from a cast of thousands, according to Rice. Gray portrays a track athlete kidnapped by a pair of sociopaths who force her to play a cat-and-mouse game of survival while they attempt to hunt her down in the wilderness.
"This movie will take you back to 'Deliverance,'" Rice said. "It's an original with a lot of plot twists and at the end, we go big. It's a thrill run."
"The movie has been getting great reviews," he said. "One critic said I usurped everything I did in football. That offended me, but this is movie-making at its best."
Rice, 41, has always been his own man.

This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forbearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay!
This show will feature survivors of the Great Flood of 2005 and subsequent disasters in the Gulf, manmade and natural. We will discuss recovery and what is left undone: Malik Rahim, co-founder, Common Ground Collective; Sakura Kone, volunteer at that time, Robert King, survivor, Angola 3; Luther Gray, survivor, Bamboula 2000, Ashé Community Cultural Center.
