North Florida’s Mixed-blood Indian People, Rediscovery of a Forgotten People
In the early 1800s, dozens of Siouan-speaking Cheraw families, including Catawbas and Lumbees, fled war and oppression in the Carolinas and migrated to Florida; just as native Appalachicola Creeks were migrating away. Being neither Black nor White, the Cheraw descendants were persecuted by the harsh “racial” dichotomy of the Jim Crow era and almost forgot their proud heritage. Today they have rediscovered their past. This is their story.
Creek Eastern Siouan Cheraw Indians, generally located in the panhandle of Florida. Related groups (Porch Creek, Redbones, Brass Ankles, etc) in which we can establish a surname connection locally or by association later (Mt Tabor Community).
The Apalachicola River Indian Community Conference is a non-profit community-based tribal organization that works for the political, social, legal, and spiritual welfare of the Creek/Eastern Siouan Cheraw Indian people in the panhandle of north Florida. Its focus is to foster tribal cultural identity and unity, documentary historical research into our origins and history, and provide venues for communication, awareness, and growth. We are the descendants of the Indian people who lived in the 3 settlements whose history is documented in the “Our History” part of this website. These are surnames in our community:

This is a continuance of last episode. We will continue taking authority over the spirit of fear, spirit of leviathan, spirit of heaviness, spirit of infirmity, spirit of jealousy, lying spirit, the spirit of perversion, the spirit of whoredoms and all other ivel and malific spirits, in the name of Jesus Christ and by the application of His blood over our lives. In 2015 and forward, we only want the Holy Spirit of the Almighty and Living God to take residence and operate in our lives.
2 Timothy 1:7, For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self- control.Isaiah 61:3, to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified. Luke 13:11-13, And behold, there was a woman who had had a disabling spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not fully straighten herself. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said to her, "Woman, you are freed from your disability." 13 And he laid his hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and she glorified God. Hosea 5:4, Their deeds do not permit them to return to their God. For the spirit of whoredom is within them, and they know not the Lord. Be healed! Be restored! Be delivered! Be freed in the name of Jesus Christ!
Who You Rock Wit?
As life in America becomes more and more perilous, we have to be sure that our village is functioning, and secure. Who You Rock With will set standards against faking. Cosign or cut off; no fence riding. Don't let our only narratives be from the lips of those that hate us. Upset the setup. You are who you rock with.
Where do you STAND?
If I'm rude to a server or customer service provider some place, they have to swallow it and be professional because in business, the customer is always right.
So explain to me how is it this cop gets away with murdering a teenage boy whose family pays taxes; therefore his salary in part.
Are we not patrons who deserve the same respect? WHY did Mike Brown have to be MURDERED for whatever level of UNARMED rudeness he may have displayed to a heavily armed public servant?
Then we have this ongoing feud between Iggy and Azealia in which the actual issue continues to completely elude Iggy and her supporters. Those ugly conversations nobody wants to have are erupting in ways that yield no resolve. So before anymore blood is spilled let's initiate the talks that will lead to necessary corrective action; but first you have to decide... who you rock with infinitely.
The adoption of the Declaration of Independence—237 years ago today—can sometimes feel like an event not just from another time, but from another world. As depicted in John Trumbull’s now-iconic 19th-century painting of the founding fathers in Philadelphia, collectively creating the framework for the nation’s revolutionary political system, such an act of open rebellion by prominent, wealthy and established figures is literally inconceivable to most living Americans.
The Revolutionary War, raging at that time, saw men young and old answer the Colonies’ call to fight the British redcoats. In their allegiance to the ideals of liberty, these rough troops — illustrated in countless paintings and drawings known to history students everywhere — shouldered the monumental task of defending a nation that was, in many respects, not yet truly born.
But as alien as that epoch might feel, time and again we’re reminded that the past is not always as distant as it so often seems.
In fact, some veterans who survived the Revolutionary War prospered well into their eighties, nineties and sometimes even beyond 100, living long enough to not only witness, but become part of, the era of the photograph.
First daguerreotypes, and then glass-plate negatives became popular in the 1840s and 1850s; by 1853, some 70 years after the great and improbable American victory over the British, more than 3 million daguerreotypes a year were being produced in the United States alone.
As these photographic means developed, and the generation that experienced the Revolution firsthand continued to dwindle, a desire to document these men — a rapidly vanishing, living link with history — emerged.
