Black Thoughts and Theory:The Radio Show-Depression In The Black Community

    in Culture

Join Alex Primo and Asha Zuri Thursday May 28th at 9 pm EST as we dissect, debate, and discuss the secret that Black folks don't talk about ... Depression in our community.

One in ten Americans will be affected by some form of Depression during their lifetime, usually caused by a major life event such as divorce, unemployment, poor health, or a death in the family. And depression is fast becoming a worldwide issue for the health industry.

How does this affect Black America specifically? Well, it has been noted by researchers that those living in poverty, us, are two and a half times more likely to experience depression. Additionally, 90% of Black males who suffer from this condition seek no treatment. On top of that women are more likely to experience depression than men, so consequently that means that Black women are suffering the most from this ailment.

“I’ve tried to commit suicide over 15 times. I have the scars on my arms of wanting to kill myself and not even know why,” said 45-year-old Tracey Hairston, a member of the health center who has bipolar disorder.

A report published by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that poverty, parenting, racial and gender discrimination put Black women — particularly low-income Black women — at greater risk for major depressive disorder (MDD).

Now that we know the problem, let's talk solutions brothers and sisters.

You can call in at (917)889-2830

WolfHours ~ INDA DEN with QueensMind & Mowfpeace 323.927.2913

    in Poetry

    Hosted By: QueensMind and Mowfpeace

Wolfhours was conceived in the mind of Shontai Ralieck George a poet ,wordsmith, barz spitter master from Brooklyn New York. Though he now resides in the southern states he still has that gritty streetwise intelligence that makes him one of the most intriguing sought after figures within the poetic community.

The wolfhour concept basically presents a way for everyone to tell their story. Everyone no matter what background or lifestyle, profession or trade, religious or non-religious ..everybody has a story to tell. The guy on the corner begging for change to the lawyer in the courtroom pleading his/her case before a judge , they all have stories to tell. You might have been driving home from work when suddenly a car crosses three lanes just to get in an accident with  you. By via of said incident you now have something to get off your chest. Well let it off!!!! We call this a vent. Venting is what the wolfhours movement prescribes if you got some stored up energy that needs to be released in the form of words. Written, spoken, even singing there is no one way to vent.

This blog talk radio show will give wordmiths nationwide a platform to showcase their skills in front of a virtual audience. Spoken word is the new hip hop. The body of the old hip hop is dying so it is up to us as word smiths to preserve this art form by embracing this movement through spoken word. So whether you are a bar spitter ..ballad writer, erotica, political, conscious or what have you. Its time to represent this art to the fullest. As and added bonus we will be featuring some of the hottest spoken word artist in the poetic community, given our callers the opportunity to call in, get in que to spit or ask the featured guest a question. Even if you just want to call in  an enjoy the show either way the airwaves  will be set a flame.

Discrimination Between Black Lesbians (The Same Difference)

    in LGBT

One would think that Black Women who are Lesbians would be the last to discrimate, especially since we suffer discrimination for just being Black, for being a Black Woman and for being a Black Woman who is also a Lesbian. Discrimination within the Black Lesbian community if VERY much real and causes gaps and wedges in what should be a solid Sisterhood.

Join us as the Cast of Les' Talk and Members of NeoSoul Sistas of KC discuss discrimination within the Black Lesbian Community and discuss the upcoming documentary done by Nneka Onuorah!

    Guest:Natalie Johnson/Make-up Artist/The Whole Truth/Left Behind

    in Movies

Natalie Christine Johnson is one of Hollywood South’s most in-demand makeup artists.  With a background in Psychology and a degree in fine arts from the University of New Orleans, Johnson began her career with M.A.C. because a fellow makeup artist happened to like the way she did her makeup when she happened upon her while working in a mall. Natalie used any kind of canvas she could get her hands on and realized that a face was just another medium. She quickly made the move into film and television.  With almost 50 productions under her belt in the past 3 years, Johnson has worked on everything from big budget feature films such as the widely popular Left Behind series with Nicolas Cage, to music videos, network and reality TV, and the Sundance darling Sex, Guaranteed where she met and worked with Stephen Dorff. After working together on that project he later asked her to be his  personal makeup artist for their next project together, The American Hero. Her commercial work ranges from local universities to clients like McDonald’s, Wal-Mart, Visa and the NFL. Expanding from beauty to special effects makeup, Johnson has worked for the last three years as a makeup department head and creative consultant for the independent and festival award winning production company, Little to N.O. Budget Films. Working closely with the director and writers, her vision helped develop worlds of zombies, ghosts, and surreal carnivals. She recently worked on the projects Abattoir and Cold Moon. You can email your questions to 123filmeasy@gmail.com or follow us on Twitter @123Film
