BLACK people  who served time for Crime, still paying the price Today when freed

There will never be a revolutionary movement in this country that doesn’t fully unleash and give expression to the sometimes openly expressed, sometimes expressed in partial ways, sometimes expressed in wrong ways, but deeply, deeply felt desire to be rid of these long centuries of oppression [of Black people]. There’s never gonna be a revolution in this country, and there never should be, that doesn’t make that one key foundation of what it’s all about.

    Bob Avakian, Chairman of the
    Revolutionary Communist Party, USA,

A growing number of states are pushing inmates out of prison in early release programs designed to reduce overcrowding and save money. But faced with a tight job market and few employers willing to hire someone with a criminal record, many former inmates are likely to end up right back behind bars.

Last month, California began releasing prisoners deemed at low risk for re-offending. Colorado, Oregon, Kentucky and Connecticut, all wracked with budgetary issues, have instituted similar moves as a way to cut costs, while others, including Michigan and Mississippi, are considering similar initiatives.

Join CULTURAL CONVERSATIONS as we reflect on the Baltimore riots, the role a Black Mother played in becoming an iconic figure in media and in community.  We welcome Dr. Robin Boylorn, educator, writer, with Crunk Feminist Collective, to the show.  Dr. Boylorn will talk about her article "A Black Mother's Love (or What Love Looks Like in Public)",  which reflected on the actions of the Baltimore Mother of the Year and society's reaction and understanding of the role Black Mothers must take in leadership.

Robin M. Boylorn, Ph.D., ?earned her doctorate in 2009 from University of South Florida.  Currently she is Assistant Professor of Interpersonal and Intercultural Communication at the University of Alabama where she teaches and writes about issues of social identity and diversity, focusing primarily on the lived experiences of black women. Boylorn's work concentrates on ways of documenting marginalized lives and making them accessible and available to wide audiences.  She seeks to give voice to silenced experiences and offer strategies for talking about and across difference (in its many manifestations).

    True Dialog

    in Culture

Nobody will ever change the condition of a people until they change within themselves. Family the burden is on us to change our behavior; to build love, trust and confidence in each other and in our people for us, then, 95% of our problems will be solved. We, as leaders must declare that we will never sell out the aspirations of our people for personal wealth, position and advancement in the society of our former slave masters and their children. We must make a covenant with our people to work and sacrifice and be willing to be the good shepherd (leaders) who will lay down our lives for our people. Let us accept our responsibility and change our behavior to that, which will make us more than comrades and brothers and Sisters, but a behavior that will make us friends and companions in the struggle for the total freedom of our people here and wherever we are found on this earth.

    God Pleasing Above People Pleasing

    in Self Help

So many of us spend so much of our time trying to please others instead of aiming to please God. We may not even realize we are people pleasers, but we can feel the exhaustive and draining effects of our actions. We are wondering why we do not feel joy from doing things for others. Many times we in fact are doing things we do not even want to do in the first place due to hidden motives in our hearts. This is not to say that there may not be times that God calls us to do for others when we might not agree or feel like it. However, even when this occurs, if we are following God there is always a peace and joy in our spirits when we remain in his will for our lives.

People pleasing is so much different than making sacrifices and necessary compromises. It also has so much less to do with the other person and more to do with us. It is one of those examples when we must leave the victim mentality (last week's show) and realize when we are a part of the problem.

People pleasing is something I have struggled with my whole life and I have been growing from it during my healing journey. I just hope this show will offer encouragement for others to start focusing on pleasing God and in turn others around will be blessed.
