    Saving Buffalo/Bison

    in News

This week the topic is Saving the Buffalo/Bison with with our host Claudia Julien. Claudia is a member of the Whisper n Thunder Radio team, and a Ambassador for WnT.  She was also the producer of the show. Our guests this week are Wayne Frederick, from the Rose Bud Sioux Tribe. Wayne is herd manager for over 500 animals on 10,000 acres, and has lived with the Buffalo all his life. Mary Borrows works at Custer State Park, South Dakota. and has a deep love connection with the buffalo who visit her every day. She also is knowledgeable on the history of the buffalo. Stephany Seay is an activist involved with the Buffalo Field Campaign whose mission is to stop the slaughter of Yellowstone’s wild buffalo herd, protect the natural habitat of wild free-roaming buffalo and native wildlife, and to work with people of all Nations to honor the sacredness of the wild buffalo.
“Protect especially the buffalo, for the buffalo will give you food and shelter.  The hide of the Buffalo will keep you from the cold, from the heat, and from the rain.  As long as you have the buffalo, you will never need to suffer.”
For many winters the people lived at peace with the animals and with the land.  When they killed a buffalo, they thanked the Great Spirit, and they used every part of the buffalo.  It took care of every need. ~ From the Montana Elk Journal Jimmy “JB”  Klyap, Dome Mountain Ranch

The BSD Basketbro Show! Episode 1.4: Akron and Bucknell

    in Sports

The basketbros are back after another undefeated week for Penn State shootyhoops. Tim Aydin, Bill DiFilippo and Eric Gibson are ready to discuss both of Pat Chambers' squad's wins last week: at home against Akron and on the road against Bucknell. Can the guys be even more complementary of D.J. Newbill than usual? Was the monster game Ross Travis had against Bucknell a sign of things to come? Since all three were in attendance, was there anything during the game against Bucknell that stood out that you normally wouldn't notice on TV? What should we expect during the upcoming week's slate of games, when PSU hosts Virginia Tech -- which is quietly a massive game -- and travels to Marshall? Get ready, get set and get excited, because the best damn Penn State basketball podcast on the Internet is back.

Mike Leahy, Defenders.org: Working To Stop The Bison Slaughter

    in Environment

Historically, as many as 20-30 million bison roamed across much of North America. Now they are an endangered species. Did you know that they are the largest land mammal in North America? Millions of bison once roamed freely across North America. However, after unregulated killing during the 19th century, wild bison were almost completely wiped out. While there are now half a million bison in the U.S., nearly all of those are cattle-bison hybrids managed for meat production. Bison are making a slow comeback as wildlife, mostly in small conservation herds. Fewer than 30,000 bison are managed for conservation instead of meat production, and only 5,000 bison are both free-roaming and disease-free, with a majority of those confined to the boundaries of Yellowstone National Park. During harsh winters and with nowhere else to go, bison are routinely culled upon leaving the park in search of food. Defenders.org is working with the Park Service, tribes, and state wildlife agencies and land managers to find suitable habitat for bison to roam free outside the park, hopefully someday putting an end to the annual slaughter. In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer will speak to Mike Leahy, Rocky Mountain Region Director, Defenders of Wildlife (www.defenders.org)to talk about this crisis and how you can get involved to stop this merciless slaughter!

Kiler Davenport Live: Interview with James Robert Webb

    in Country Music

James Robert Webb is a genuine country boy from Kellyville, Oklahoma who found a love of music before he learned to walk. You never know what instrument James may play live, but you can be sure that his voice will captivate you with a voice that is powerful, tender and uniquely country. Influenced by the great Oklahoma vocalists Garth Brooks, Ronnie Dunn and Vince Gill, Webb has a flair for traditional country with a modern bent. When it comes to country music, Webb's influences lie along the traditional side with modern influences. "I grew up listening to the great vocalists-like Jones, Haggard, Twitty, Rogers, Nelson, and Cash. When the new traditionalists came along like Strait, Garth, Randy Travis--it was the best of both worlds. I fell in love with those meaningful, deep ballads like Unanswered Prayers and Diggin' Up Bones and got to rock out to honky tonk tunes like Hard Workin' Man and Chattahoochie." This mixture of influences is clear in his live show as well as his recordings. Born This Day, the first album release on his fledgling indie label, Bison Creek Records, had two singles on country radio. The first single was the title track, cowritten by Webb, a Christian country Christmas song that saw airplay in 30 US markets and charted #12 on the European Hotdisk chart. His follow up, "Long Hot Winter" peaked at #65 on the US national Music Row Chart.
