    in Family

Wade Hayes, country singer and advanced colorectal cancer advocate, returns to Ask MomRN Show to discuss his brand new album and song that he is launching for Colon Cancer Awareness Month—“Go Live Your Life.”

Wade was inspired to write this deeply personal song after his oncologist told him he no longer had evidence of the disease after two bouts with colorectal cancer, a disease that impacts more than 136,000 Americans each year with about one in five having an advanced form. The song summarizes Wade’s attitude and he hopes it can inspire people going through difficult times to stay strong. The campaign will also give back to the patients who need it most: for every iTunes download of “Go Live Your Life,” a donation of a $1 (up to $50,000) will be made by Genentech to the Colon Cancer Alliance Blue Note Fund, a non-profit that supports advanced colorectal cancer patients. Dr. Manish Shah, an oncologist specializing in advanced colorectal cancer also joins Wade to talk about advanced colorectal cancer signs, symptoms and diagnosis.

Yoga for Cancer - By: Tari Prinster

    in Spirituality

Tari Prinster is a cancer survivor, yoga teacher and author. She is the Founder of Yoga4Cancer, LLC (y4c) and the Retreat Project (nonprofit) – businesses that are bringing specialized yoga cancer survivors through classes & retreats.  Also she leads a robust teacher training program to help enable yoga teachers to best adapt all styles to fit the unique needs of cancer patients & survivors.

In Tari’s own words, she recounts her background with yoga and cancer: ‘When I was fifty, I started a yoga practice on a hunch it would ease menopausal symptoms. It did! That was sixteen years ago. Today, I am an example that it is never too late to start, never too late to change. Yoga made me feel younger and stand straighter. I sleep better, my weight is good, and my bones are strong.

I found yoga a powerful tool to manage the daily challenges of cancer treatments as well as the side effects and life-long vulnerabilities they create. I discovered yoga was more than a way to stay healthy. It gave me emotional support and spiritual comfort so needed during recovery.

I was curious why yoga was doing so much for me. My research made it clear why yoga strengthens the immune system, thus providing, among other things, protection against a cancer reoccurrence.

Helo Matzelle debuts newest book Halo Found Hope

    in Lifestyle

Despite being tested by a terrifying diagnosis, Helo Matzelle clung to faith

Helo Matzelle thought her relationship with God was as good as it could get. As a busy stay-at-home mom and devoted wife, she would have described her life as beautiful. Then, one Friday afternoon in 2011, her life changed. In her new book, Halo Found Hope: A Memoir shares how her life went from planning ahead for the weekend to relearning basic skills after being diagnosed with a rare brain tumor.

Matzelle says when she looks back, she should have paid more attention to the physical symptoms: the strange voices in her head, like she was remembering movie lines. The metallic taste in her mouth. The ringing in her ears. But those symptoms were easily chalked up to the stress of life or the effects of spending too much time in a building with freshly painted walls. However, what started as a routine MRI for her ear revealed Matzelle’s symptoms signaled a more serious problem. “After hearing the terrifying news that I had a golf ball-sized tumor on my brain,

Matzelle details how her recovery from surgery was only supposed to entail six days in the hospital, but things took a turn for the worse in the operating room. Matzelle’s brain tumor was one in two million: Because of the way it was structured, the removal caused intense brain swelling, and several hours later, she became unresponsive. A portion of all author proceeds from Helo Found Hope will go to the National Brain Tumor Society,
