ENVISION THIS: Walking the talk of solving the planetary climate crisis
Billy Rixon of Freeport, Maine, is dedicated to ending our dependence on fossil fuels and building a healthy, sustainable life for people and the planet. In a letter to the editor of the Portland Press Herald, Billy said:
“In light of the winter weather we have experienced this year, some people have questioned the validity of global warming. Perhaps “climate disruption” would be a better way of understanding what is going on throughout the country, as “climate disruption” doesn’t always mean warming in every location. Western droughts and wildfires, the Colorado floods, Southern deep freezes, “megastorms” and polar vortexes are all part of a pattern that has been predicted by scientists studying climate change. The rapid warming and melting of the polar ice cap occurring in the Arctic have led to a weakening of the jet stream, pushing it far to the north in the western part of our continent and dipping down far to the south in the east. We can expect more severe weather events as this process accelerates. Isn’t it time we consider the long-range consequences of climate change and do everything we can to moderate its impact on future generations?”
As a grassroots organizer at 350 Maine, Billy advocates for total divestment of all state monies in fossil fuels; supports the student-led effort to convince Bowdoin College to divest; advocates for a decentralized renewable energy system that is guided by people and not profit margins; and joined a 70-mile walk in Cape Cod to back clean energy.
Let’s walk a mile in his moccasins.

What do vampires, Doug Jones, black-and-white cinema, and modern green screen technology all have in common? The answer is Nosferatu - a new visual remix of the classic German expressionist 1922 black-and-white silent horror film.
The idea is to bring this classic horror film back to life and with a unique feel to show to a modern audience while still honoring the masters of old. Writer and director David Lee Fisher has garnered a team of creative individuals who are all collaborating to recreate the 1922 film in a rather unique way.
Nosferatu is on KickStarter at thevampirelives.com with a goal to raise $60,000 by December 3rd.
Doug Jones, famed actor best known for his work as Abe Sapien in the Hellboy films, El Fauno and the Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth, Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus, and the Silver Surfer in Rise Of The Silver Surfer, has been cast to portray the menacing Count Orlok. His makeup has been created by Mike Elizalde of Spectral Motion Studios.
This evening I will speak with and explore the music of E.C. Coleman a drummer and composer. As a musical director for Loretta Holloway, he gained a variety of experience performing around the world. After that experience, he auditioned and began playing with jazz bassist Al McKibbon. As a result of a call from drummer Billy Higgins, E. C. played with jazz saxophonist Azar Lawrence. Join us this evening to learn more about E.C. Coleman. Jazz lives on the Jazz Notes program.
I am the youngest of three girls born to Louis Hoseas Benjamin Moolman and Adelien Engelbrecht Moolman. I was born in 1972 in Johannesburg and lived in Cape Town, Pretoria, Ondangwa (Namibia) to name but a few. My father was a Sargent Major in the Army by the time he went on pension. My mother also joined the military while we lived in Namibia. Both of my sisters left the military as Sargent Majors. I was the only one who didn’t follow in my father’s footsteps. In part because I was found medically unfit to join the forces. I was the rebel in the family. I worked my way into a managerial position fresh out of College with nothing but a Secretarial diploma.
I made friends with people around the world. One of these people ended up being my husband. Who flew to South Africa and refused to leave until he had my hand in marriage. My father reluctantly allowed me to leave and my sisters were angry at me. I started a new life and in Canada I experienced new emotions that I was never aware of before.
I have the “White Shame” complex and “Survivor Guilt” the shame come from thinking of all the people who lost their lives and freedom during Apartheid, the guilt because I am raising my child in a place where the two of us can go for a walk in the bush without fear of other people, only animals. While my nieces’ children, who are slightly younger than him, haven’t even yet learned how to ride a bike because it’s not safe for them to leave their homes.
