Rundgren Radio with special guest Ed Palermo

    in Music

Ed will be performing the music of Todd Rundgren this Thursday in NYC.

Thursday, Jan 07, 2016 8:00 PM EST, Iridium, New York, NY

Ed Palermo’s Big Band has been together since 1980 and has been playing and honing the music of Frank Zappa (among other composers) for fifteen years, mainly in performance at the Bottom Line and Iridium nightclubs in New York City.

Their CDs, The Ed Palermo Big Band Plays the Music of Frank Zappa (If you have a copy, it’s now a collector’s item!!!), ‘Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance’ and the newly released ‘Eddy Loves Frank’ are concepts of love for the complex music of Frank Zappa. These crafty interpretations by the Ed Palermo Big Band stand as a testament to the longevity and originality of Zappa and his music. This music drives on its spontaneity and unpredictability. Palermo and his band bring this volatile music to life in a deft and powerful way, making it their own.

Made up of top New York musicians, the CDs also feature guest soloists: ‘Zappa-alums’ guitarist Mike Keneally and vibraphonist Dave Samuels, saxophonists Bob Mintzer and Chris Potter and guitarist Mike Stern.

Palermo has recorded two other critically-acclaimed big band albums and worked with Tito Puente, Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, Lena Horne and arranged music for James Brown for a concert at the Hollywood Bowl in L.A. that took place 3 months before he died. His approach was influenced by Todd Rundgren, Cannonball Adderley, Neil Young, Edgar Winter, Nelson Riddle, Charles Tolliver, Gene Ammons and Brian Wilson. His devotion to eclectic roots also includes classical composers such as Prokofiev and Shostakovich.

Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with Dr. Christobel Llewellyn of KINDERJAZZ!

    in Music

First, it's good to take the opportunity to say thank you to Michael Stover for the introduction to Kinderjazz :)  How WONDERFUL that, close on the heels of me saying I'd love to focus on Music Education, here comes the news of a big band specifically geared to kids?  Here's what grabbed yours truly about Kinderjazz: they don't believe that childrens want "sound bites."  They (I'll get to who THEY are soon) believe that young minds want to soak up the musical information the way that adults do.  With more interest, possibly.  Children want the experience of sound and instruments.  This 12 piece Big Band gives it to them - with passion and devotion.

Dr. Christobel Llewellyn and David Llewellym are the beautifully involved creators of Kinderjazz.  In 1997, they formulated an idea that children could be encouraged to reach their full potential through live music.  How incredible!  They have been SO active since then that seven albums have been recorded.  The most recent is the one that we'll discuss on the next episode of "Hybrid Jazz."  Get ready to be delightfully surprised!  Latin, Ragtime, Swing, Blues - stunning Jazz - it's all here.  You might want to ponder the notion that Kinderjazz has re-created the concept of family entertainment.  This array of caring and motivated musicians have sold-out the Sydney Opera House time after time.  Dr. Llewellyn has been Australia's Citizen of the Year - so profound has been her impact in her country.

THIS radio host has made a commitment to Music Education in 2016.  And there's no better way to focus on that than with this stunning ensemble of talent.  The ONLY Jazz Big Band for children :)  My, how we'll relish discussing children becoming enlightened and inspired via JAZZ!  Join us at two p.m. Eastern USA time.

    Big Blue Views - SB50 - Good & Bad;FLA report; UL Sanctions;Kelli McDowell-ASOB

    in Sports

Kristin and Michele have a full slate of topics tonight, including Super Bowl 50 - what was good, what was bad and of course, commercials we loved.

Tonight we welcome A Sea Of Blue's Kelli McDowell (@kellibeth).  Kelli has covered most of UK Hoops' games this season, so we will get her thoughts & Insights on the season thus far & how she views Coach Mitchell's chances of finally getting over the hump & getting the Cats to a Final Four.

UL self-imposed a post-season ban.  Was this fair to the players?  If not, how would you suggest the school handle the situation?  We want to hear YOUR views.

Friday was the unveiling of the new UK logo & "secondary" logo.  As expected, this was received by fans with very mixed results.  Love it, hate it or just don't care?  Let us know how you feel!

After a stinging loss (giving up a 21 point lead for crying out loud!), the Cats bounced back in a big way on Saturday when they stomped the Gators.  Kristin and Michele were there covering the game for CMR and will give you their eyewitness account of the events.

As always, we will have talk about UK Hoops and lots more college basketball happenings.  Call in and have your views heard: 646-716-4741
