I was unable to write "...with United Health Care Cycling team's Benjamin Day" this time as Ben formally retired from professional racing following yesterday's final stage of the US Pro Cycling Challenge. After a 17 year racing career, Ben decided it was time to focus on his coaching business 'Day by Day Coaching'. Ben will give us his final recap of the 2014 USPCC. It was an understandably emotional finish for Day but he's excited about the future.
A HUGE "Thank You!" to Ron Kiefel and Wheat Ridge Cyclery for allowing us to record this morning's presentation with cycling great Jens Voigt. 7 time Tour de France finisher Kiefel moderates the discussion with 17 time (including 340 stage finishes) Tour de France finisher Voigt. Discussion ranges from Voigt's childhood in East Germany, fall of the Berlin Wall to whether or not Jens is more popular in the US or German. Oh yes, there is plenty of cycling talk as well.
Kicking off the show we have MFC Champion Anthony Birchak (11-1 MMA) who will be making his UFC debut against Joe Soto at UFC 177 next weekend. Anthony has been on a tear lately, riding a 5 fight win streak, that consists of 4 finishes, he looks to carry that momentum into his UFC debut.
Next up we have Alan Jouban (10-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC), who is fresh off his UFC debut win over Seth Baczynski earlier this month. Jouban finished the veteran Baczynski in the first round of their fight, showing much promise for the Black House fighter. The win extended Jouban’s win streak to 3, with 2 of the wins coming by way of KO.
Next on our lineup is TUF Lesnar vs. Dos Santos winner, Tony ‘El Cucuy’ Ferguson (15-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC). Ferguson’s last outing in the octagon led to a one-punch knockout against Katsunori Kikuno back at UFC 173 in May. He looks to carry that momentum into his bout against Danny Castillo at UFC 177 this upcoming weekend.
Last but certainly not least, is arguably the best striking coach around, Duane ‘Bang’ Ludwig himself. While Ludwig is retired from competition, his star pupil TJ Dillashaw will be stepping into the Octagon this weekend at UFC 177 to defend his bantamweight title against Renan Barao in a highly anticipated rematch. Dillashaw defeated Barao back in May in spectacular fashion to dethrone Barao. Also coming up for Duane Ludwig is Chad Mendes’ rematch against Jose Aldo at UFC 179 on October 25th.

Spencer was thirteen when he was paralyzed in a snowboarding accident. Prior to the acident, he loved swimming in the ocean, playing basketball and snowboarding. He used to revel in the freedom of riding his bike with his friends, the wind flying in his hair.On February 1, 2010, Spencer's life changed forever. He crashed his snowboard and shattered his C4/C5 vertebrae, sustaining a severe spinal cord injury. Unable to breathe, move or feel anything below chest level, Spencer remained hospitalized for over three months. But Spencer never accepted the doctors prognosis and he never gave up.
Now, four years and six rehabilitation sessions a week later, Spencer is making amazing progress. He has sensation and movement in almost every part of his body. He can push his own wheelchair (with power assist wheels), write with his left hand, stand, and take unassisted steps. He now drives independently in a specially adapted car. He is also a high school senior with top grades. Spencer has demonstrated courage and an exemplary work ethic in his recovery. He also has a great sense of humor.
United Health Care Cycling Team's Benjamin Day joins us to discuss Stage 5 of the US Pro Cycling Challenge. This stage’s serene first 80 miles hide a vicious finish and a last chance for climbing specialists to really make a move. Starting in the new host community of Woodland Park, Stage 5 heads west then north through some of the most picturesque terrain in Colorado. A quiet run through the Pike National Forest on Tarryall Rd., which was unpaved until just last year, and the riders will christen it properly with high speeds and lots of breakaway attempts. The action really starts when the race hits Fairplay and begins the long grind up 11,500 ft. Hoosier Pass, the highest point in the race. Then it is on to Breckenridge, where last year’s challenging finish up Moonstone Rd. will be repeated again. This nasty little climb can kill a break or launch a winner.
Benjamin Day of the United Health Care Cycling team joins us to discuss Stage 4 of the US Pro Cycling Challenge held today in Colorado Springs. After a ceremonial start at the world famous Broadmoor, the race will head into town and join up with a 16-mile circuit that will be raced four times. With climbs through Garden of the Gods, Mesa Rd. and the infamous Ridge Rd., which hits grades of nearly 17 percent, the route will present some challenges for the riders. If a sprinter hangs on to win, they will have earned it the hard way.
