We’re interviewing Betty Turnbull, Author of “A Sergeant in the House” where she tells the story of Lenny who desperately wants a puppy. His father is in the military, the family must move frequently, and Lenny is still very young to care for an animal, so Lenny strikes a bargain: When his daddy becomes a sergeant, Lenny can have a puppy. When his father is deployed to war, Lenny learns what it means to be responsible, to care for his family, and to help around the house. A dreaded phone call brings the news that Lenny’s father has been injured and is being sent home. When Lenny’s father explains that this means he’ll never become a sergeant, Lenny realizes that what he truly wants is his daddy–puppy or no puppy. Enter to win a copy here!
Next we’re talking about the new Dress Blues for females and the cost of uniform research between the services.

Betty says: "My inspiration to start this blog was my mom and the millions of women out there who have lived full lives. They have lived through changing times and challenging life events. The have had experiences that sometimes may have seemed impossible to manage yet they persevered and came out stronger for it."

When Willie Bradley decides to give us The Full Package, he gives it full throttle. And it's funny that yours truly just said that, because one of the many bands that Willie's talent graced was called "The Package Band." :)
Seriously, this man has street cred as few have. A graduate of South Carolina State with Music Education and Performance mastery, Willie then made his way through a myriad of groups and genres. That trumpet gained access to the "inner circles" of Jazz - and he spent time with Betty Carter, Clark Terry, Frank Foster, Max Roach, and Dizzy Gillespie. On the other end of the music rainbow, Willie also opened for or played with Fourplay, Joey Sommerville, Bobby Blue Bland and more. So you see where this is going - our guest has a resume that's all encompassing. Okay, he's hip to Hybrid - that's what we need to say!
On our guest's CD, he utilizes all of what he has learned through these years of playing the straight ahead, the contemporary, the Funk, the Soul, the Gospel - and he ties it together with the help of a special believer: Nicholas Cole. Bradley and Cole have co-written most of the songs on the album - which are pretty incredible! Then, they enlisted the services of other artists that bring a certain pop and flow to a wholly organic endeavor. You're familiar with Lin Rountree, Marcus Anderson, and Jeff Kashiwa, I take it. Yeah, like THAT!
The last time some of us saw Willie was when he was with the All-Stars in Virginia - delivering a delicious stew of tasty trumpet that ebbed and flowed with the band in a most scintillating way. Christian de Mesones can back me up on that - because he was adamant about having Willie THERE :) It was some kind of night.
And there are MORE events coming - that's why Willie is visiting! Join us on 8/28 and discover Willie Bradley!

Film critic Mack Bates and host Betty Jo Tucker review two new Susan Sarandon films -- The Last of Robin Hood and The Calling. Scott Abramovitch, who wrote the screenplay for The Calling, plans to join the discussion, and Richard Glatzer, director/writer of The Last of Robin Hood, has been invited to call in.
The Last of Robin Hood follows Errol Flynn's scandalous affair with a star-struck teenager during the late 1950s. Cast members include Kevin Kline, Dakota Fanning and Susan Sarandon. This intriguing movie deals with the desire for fame and the high price it exacts. Kline plays Flynn; Fanning portrays the somewhat naive teen; and Sarandon is her fame-obsessed mother.
In The Calling, a mysterious and suspenseful thriller, Sarandon portrays a world-weary detective trying to solve a series of gruesome murders. With these two very different roles, this talented Oscar-winning actress again proves her versatility.
An avid Sarandon fan, Mack Bates conducted an in-depth interview with Sarandon a few years ago for The Leader, a University of Wisconsin student newspaper. He also contributed to Tucker's book about Sarandon (Susan Sarandon: A True Maverick) and now writes for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. He also serves as a staff blogger for Milwaukee Magazine's official film blog.
