Travel the World: Visiting Belize and the rich Mayan culture

    in Travel

Tonight on the CommDiginews Hour Travel the World we continue our tour of Central America with a tour of Belize. Geographically situated South of Mexico with Guatemala to the West and South, Belize is the only country in Central America whose official language is English.

The Mayan civilization dates to about 1500 BC and thrived until about 900 AD before it suddenly disappered; Modern day Belize is formerly known as British Honduras, gaining its independence in 1981. The influence of the British on the schools and the world feel of this tiny county combined with the depth of the Mayan culture creates a diverse community wiht many cultures, including a strong Amish influence.

Today the Mayan way of life is still strong as Mayan's work to keep their historical places and culture survive. Descendants of the Maya still have a rich presence and  thrive primarily as farmers in the region, while many of the youth are found in tourism as docents at historical sites, the many pyramids that still exist, the largest being Lamanai in the Northeast of the country.

Join us as we Travel the World, tonight to Central America and Belize.

BELIZE HARD TALK – THE TIPPING POINT

    in Current Events

BELIZE HARD TALK - THE TIPPING POINT", Is an effort to provide those who do not subscribe to the predominant PUPD paradigm, a medium through which to: communicate, discuss and analyse prevailing issues. The goal is to give those who otherwise don’t have access to traditional mass communication channels, an avenue through which to reach Belizeans both at home and abroad. ‘Hard Talk’ is indicative of the commitment to discuss issues that the politicos and party hacks of the PUDP are unwilling to touch. ‘The Tipping Point’, is attributed to the text of a similar name, by renowned author Malcom Gladwell in which he defines the concept as, “the moment of critical mass, the threshold, the boiling point...”. Both socially and politically, Belize is at this juncture. In lending to Gladwell’s perspective, it is aspired that the notion of “…ideas and products and messages and behaviours spread(ing) as viruses do”, shall prove applicable to the Belizean reality and will thus inspire a: vibrant, proactive and determined civil society, with a commitment to ushering in the substantive changes required to move Belize forward. I therefore invite you to join the conversation and share in what will certainly prove to be the antithesis of what you’ve come to expect from Belizean Talk Shows!

Author James Rollins, Kenya, America's Whiskey Trail and Founders' Homes

    in Travel

Kenya is called the "Heart of Africa" and is considered to be the cradle of civilization.  With history that rich and a diverse community of tribes and natural resources, Jacinta Zioka from Kenya Tourism, says that everyone should visit her country at least once in their lifetime.

For action-adventure author James Rollins, his travels, adventures and interests play a critical role in the development of his thrillers.  In his new book, The Bone Labyrinth, James used his training as a veternarian to explore the question of human development and intelligence.  He takes us to mankind's next leap and presents the question of our fate as a species.

Accordingly to Saturday Evening Post contributor, Todd Pitock, we can learn a lot about American history through understanding the progresssion of whiskey.  Todd takes us along America's multi-state Whiskey Trail and gives us a history lesson between sips.

American history can also be understood through the perspective of our Founders homes, accordingly to author Myron Magnet.  In his book, "The Founders at Home:  The Building of America" Myron says that the architectural styles of our Founders reflects their social consciousness and their ideals for America's future at the time.

We walked along the floor of the New York Times Travel Show (#NYTTravelShow) and spoke to representatives from Sri Lanka and Belize.
