Today, Dr. Annie Abram and Dr. Sherry Hamby will discuss domestic violence, using a new paradigm that challenges traditional perspectives about battered women and provides a new way of understanding this complex problem.
"........ the incredible creativity and resilience of battered women is little recognized by some who work with victims of domestic violence and much of the general public. Many battered women engage in protective strategies and actively cope with the problem of victimization. In fact, counter to some stereotypes, nationally representative data shows battered women in the U.S. seek professional help from law enforcement at rates similar to other crime victims, and seek professional help from advocates and counselors at rates similar to those with other psychological problems". Sherry Hamby, PhD.
Dr. Sherry Hamby is Research Professor of Psychology and Director of the Life Paths Research Program at the University of the South. She is also founding editor of the APA journal Psychology of Violence. A licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Hamby has worked for more than 20 years on the problem of violence. She is co-investigator on the National Survey of Children’s Exposure to Violence. She is the recipient of numerous honors and author or co-author of more than 100 works including The Web of Violence: Exploring Connections among Different Forms of Interpersonal Violence and Abuse. Dr. Hamby’s work has appeared in the New York Times, Huffington Post, the Christian Science Monitor, and hundreds of other media outlets. Her most recent book is Battered Women's Protective Strategies: Stronger Than You Know (Oxford University Press, 2014).
J.D. Smith is an indie music artist who's giving back. In 1992, she took her two young sons and fled to a battered women's shelter to escape a physically and mentally abusive husband.
"I was in the abusive relationship for 7 years. During those years, I was severely beaten - to the point where now it has affected my bones and joints where the beatings occured. It affected my mental state too."
J.D. joins us on the HealthyPlace Mental Health Radio Show to talk about her experience and to share some advice for other women in abusive relationships.

Join us today on Women Leading the Way Radio as Shawn Marie Turi, your host of Business IS Personal: What you do and WHY you do it... MATTERS, interviews Madison Canary, Founder and Yogi of Yoga N Motion.
In the work place, Yoga has been shown to decrease stress and increase productivity! Madison teaches both privately and to groups and she is contracted by not only dozens of yoga studios but also by corporations who believe and support company wellness programs… which we certainly need more of. Madison is especially trained in Vinyasa flow, Restorative/Yin yoga as well as children's yoga and her works focus is to encourage students to find their inner source of power through unifying body and breathe to overcome the false limitations of the mind.
After 10 years as a ballerina, Madison came to yoga, as injuries she’d endured in dance and ballet, left her body injured and unable to move. Yoga brought her body and spirit back to life and from the deep appreciation and love for the practice, she trained to become a certified teacher, so she could in turn pass along the gift of yoga, which had transformed her life. Her excitement for the practice is infectious and the number one thing she aspires to pass along to her students is joy. Joy for life, for movement, for their bodies.
Yoga has brought feelings of peace and determination to Madison that affect both her business and her life and in the most positive ways, and as a result, she feels healthier, stronger and more centered now than ever before.
She wishes that for her students as well and sharing yoga with others is an honor and a privilege and it’s truly what she’s been called to do.

Today's Show: Talking (or not talking) about Money
Ephesians 4:15 tells us that we are to speak the truth in love. Ordinarily we’d interpret a verse like that to have relevance when we’re approaching someone about a potential conflict. But regarding finances, I have come to know it also as a directive that is particularly relevant to the second part of the verse which tells us why?: So that “we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ”.
What I have experienced in my own life and with countless people I have worked with over the years is the interesting stronghold that Satan gains in people’s lives by convincing them to keep secrets about money. The secrets can be small like not being completely honest about how much something cost or larger like not telling your spouse that you lost your job or your life savings in a bad investment.
This week on Financial Grace Radio we’ll look at different scenarios for how to talk about money with various people in your life, from call-centre operators at the bank, to your spouse, children, boss, financial advisor, friends, etc.
