Property Rights and Wrongs: African-Americans at the Courthouse with The Legal Genealogist

From being treated as property to having their property stolen by those who used the law against the freedmen, African Americans' experience at the courthouse had only one bright spot: it created records for the genealogist-descendants.

A Certified Genealogist with a law degree, The Legal Genealogist Judy G. Russell examines the interplay between genealogy and the law. She is a lecturer, educator and writer who enjoys helping others understand a variety of issues, ranging from using DNA in family history to the effect the law had on our ancestors’ lives and the records they left behind.

A graduate of George Washington University and Rutgers School of Law-Newark, Judy is a Colorado native with roots deep in the American south on her mother’s side and entirely in Germany on her father’s side. She's a member of the National Genealogical Society, the Association of Professional Genealogists, and, among others, the state genealogical societies of New Jersey, North Carolina, Virginia, Texas and Illinois. She has written for the National Genealogical Society Quarterly and the National Genealogical Society Magazine .

Sam Thurman, Cliff Stewart, Lisa Stewart and Lamont Banks, of the Colorado exoneration firm A Just Cause, discuss what happens when the wheels of justice trample unbridled over the rights of innocent Americans.

Although the American system of justice is the most-respected worldwide, it is still a system designed, and operated, by humans, which means it's not perfect.

A Just Cause is currently campaigning for "FreeTheIRP6," who's been wrongly imprisoned in Florence, CO for a crime they didn't commit. Read full story: www.freetheirp6.org.

    in Current Events

    Call-In 516-387-1639

On July 13th, 2015, Sandra Bland, a 28 year old Black woman from Naperville, IL, was found dead in a Waller County, Texas, jail cell on July 13, three days after she was arrested for a minor traffic offense. She was in Texas to begin a new job at her alma mater, Prairie View A&M University. The cause of death was listed as "self-inflicted asphyxiation"  - suicide - with a noose fashioned from a plastic garbage bag.

Join me with my co-host, educator and civil rights advocate Sharonda Allen, as we discuss the disturbing aspects of this case, how a traffic stop for a minor offense escalated into a major confrontation, incarceration, and the unexplained death of a young woman with so much to live for.

What is it like to be Black in America?

We anticipate a no-holds-barred discussion on the unanswered questions in the Sandra Bland case and the repeated violations of the civil rights of African-Americans at the hands of police, and the callous disregard for Black lives.

CALL US at 516-387-1639 to join the conversation.

Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) - 1149

    in Self Help

SPECIAL TOPIC Night - "For Our Kids" - Deborah Maddison and Tracy Baxter, Canadian activists from British Columbia, will join Bill Murray to lead this evening's discussion about the Rights of Children and Families in North America. The institution commonly known as "Child Protective Services" has operated in an almost untouchable position in North America for decades, as if it was "above the law". To speak out against CPS was to risk losing your children, your family, your career, and in some cases your freedom, as retaliation was quick and vicious. Thankfully, there has been a recent turn in public opinion due to media exposure, precedent-setting lawsuits, ground breaking documentaries and people refusing to be silenced. Slowly, the Courts are starting to hold CPS agencies responsible for their illegal actions and abuses." We'll speak to the producer and director of 'Hope Stripped Bare', Tom Sutherland and cameraman Linley Redford, whose documentary is about the CPS system in North America. We will also be speaking with attorney and advocate Nanine McCool, executive director of Bridge to Justice Foundation, who fought to expose injustice in Family Court. We'll also have a former CPS worker who is willing to speak out about just how deep and how prevalent the corruption of these agencies is. ~~ Every two weeks a new THEME will be presented in this series, with frequent special guests speaking from their own experience. ~~ Please see our web page at: www.NAASCA.org/ForOurKids or write to: naasca.forourkids@gmail.com
