When the winds of Katrina began to die down, the flood waters began to rise. For St. Bernard Parish, the flooding was nearly absolute. 99% of the structures had been flooded and destroyed. In some places 25 feet of water lapped up upon the rooftops.
St Bernard Parish is the only county in the history of the United States to have been nearly completely destroyed.
As of the census of 2000, there were 67,229 people (an increase of 598 or 0.9% over the previous decade), 25,123 households, and 18,289 families residing in the parish. The population density was 145 people per square mile (56/km²). There were 26,790 housing units at an average density of 58 per square mile (22/km²).
After Katrina, with an entire population reeling from the destruction, many evacuated. Those that remained waited for the waters to subside and began the long process of re-building.
For perspective, as of the census of 2010, there are 35,897 people. The community is still re-building 10 years later.
During the storm, the St Bernard Parish Fire and Sherriff's Department deployed to aid the community as the flood waters rose and remained.
Chief Thomas Stone is our special guest.
Chief Stone recently told us, "So much has occurred with the recovery and rebuilding of our departments, such as building new stations, replacing our apparatus, hiring and training new firefighters. Our departments have been to hell and we’re not back yet. We had a mass departure of senior officers in the years after Katrina, threat of layoffs of firefighters and all the red tape trying to rebuild. We have not even replaced all of our equipment lost through the Public Assistance Project Worksheet program 9 ½ years later".
Please join us for what promises to be a fascinating show about perseverance, reality, hopes, and dreams.
Marijuana legalization measures have been a mixed bag of good and bad for medical marijuana patients. With California most likely to have a legalization initiative on the ballot in 2016, legalization proponents want to work with medical marijuana patients to ensure that their rights are protected under any marijuana legalization initiatives that are on the ballot.
Dale Sky Jones is Director of the Coalition for Cannabis Policy Reform, a California based nonpartisan organization dedicated to ending marijuana prohibition through ballot initiatives, legislative collaboration and public education campaigns. As the shows first guest, Ms. Jones will provide information on the series of roundtable discussions being held in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego and Santa Ana on Jan. 30 and 31. Information on prospects for the 2016 initiatives and how patients can work together to make sure they do not have a negative impact is at the center of these community forums.
Students for Sensible Drug Policy at the University of California at Irvine are sponsoring a symposium on Saturday, Feb. 21 that will bring together experts from the legal, political, and judicial arenas, as well as civil rights activists, harm reduction workers, entrepreneurs, and full-time reform workers for an in-depth look at how U.S. drug policies have affected society, and what lies ahead on the horizon.
The show’s second guest is Lauren Ayn Mendelsohn, coordinator for SSDP at UCI who is also a J.D. Candidate, 2016. She will explain the ins and outs of this important symposium and reveal the names of the invited speakers and participants. Marijuana law reform is a key component of the reform process and Ms. Mendelsohn will provide information on how this is incorporated into the symposium’s presentations.
There is a THREAT right here in the United States! A threat that will challenge our very survival as a nation. The Government knows about it and won't do a thing to stop it. While they are worried about Evangelicals, Veterans, and Legal Gun owners as being "domestic terrorists," we have Actual terrorists actually TRAINING right here on US soil. People need to ARM themselves in order to be prepared for when these Islamic Crazies start Jihad. If we don't, we will regret it! They will try to attack, when they think we are at our weakest. They are like Prey lying in wait. Luke 22:36 He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.(NIV)
Counties, too, "are created to give effect to and enable citizens
to exercise the right of local self-government."Morris v. Board of Com'rs of Switzerland County, 131 Ind. 285, 31
N.E. 77 (1892).
"Political subdivisions of States counties, cities, or whatevernever were and never have been considered as sovereign entities. Rather, they have been traditionally regarded as subordinate governmental instrumentalities created by the State to assist in the carrying out of state governmental functions. As stated by the Court in Hunter v. City of Pittsburgh, 207 U.S. 161, 178, 28 S.Ct. 40, 46, 52 L.Ed. 151, these governmental units are `created as convenient agencies for exercising such of the governmental powers of the state as may be entrusted to them,' and the `number, nature, and duration of the powers conferred upon [them] * * * and the territory over which they shall be exercised rests in the absolute discretion of the state.'" (Emphasis added.)
Amanda Brooks' and Jill Brenneman's lives were forever changed when Percy Isgitt's negligence caused the plane he was flying to crash, badly injuring both of his passengers. Amanda saw multiple US surgeons with varying, but largely poor results. All appointments were paid for in cash out of her pocket as she has no insurance and Percy Isgitt, the responsible party, refused to pay.
Amanda recently had her images read in consult with a non-US specialist who viewed the same images as the US doctors and observed what the other doctors missed. Objective imaging showed a non-displaced cerebral fracture in her cervical spine as a result of the plane crash, along with 2 herniated discs in her cervical vertebrae, and a cerebral bleed.
US doctors, allegedly the best in the world, missed the cervical fracture. What is a cervical fracture? It is a broken neck. Instead, the doctors wanted to follow their typical US "conservative care:" start with anti inflams, PT, oral steroids, injected steroid, and only after all of those options were exhausted to go to surgery. All conveniently running up billable units paid for by Amanda. Amanda went outside of the US health care system, got a surgeon who took an hour with her and explained each aspect of her injury and told what we knew. There is no solution to her neck injuries other than surgery.
One minute before the plane crash Amanda was a very healthy 30-something woman. One minute after the plane crash Amanda had a brain bleed, 2 herniated discs in her neck, and a broken neck. Yet doctors and attorneys were confused about the injuries and confused about how they transpired.
Malpractice, bias, misogyny of health care providers and the failure of US health care.
Well inside an officer's career arch, we saw the American Navy move from the Great White Fleet, The Spanish American War to the age of the Dreadnought. Our Army, from ad-hoc volunteer units to a professional army going head-to-head with the finest professional army on the planet.
How did our military and our Navy build up to WWI, and how did that experience inform the evolution of our national defense infrastructure.
Our guest for the full hour will be Dr. John T. Kuehn , the General William Stofft Chair for Historical Research at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College CGSC). He retired from the U.S. Navy 2004 at the rank of commander after 23 years of service as a naval flight officer flying both land-based and carrier-based aircraft. He has taught a variety of subjects, including military history, at CGSC since 2000. He authored Agents of Innovation (2008), A Military History of Japan: From the Age of the Samurai to the 21st Century (2014), and co-authored Eyewitness Pacific Theater (2008) with D.M. Giangreco as well as numerous articles and editorials and was awarded a Moncado Prize from the Society for Military History in 2011. His latest book, due out from Praeger just in time for the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo is Napoleonic Warfare: The Operational Art of the Great Campaigns.
Profane might rarely experience what a mason experiences whether together or after making his way home. Being true to his obligations, he exists in a constant state of vigilence. How can that be you say? How can anyone be aware every moment of every day? The secret isn't so secret once you know it- but here it is- It is likeing learning to have a bag full of goals. Some are short term, some are small, others are life goals and consume great energy. To be vigilent is to be mindful of what goal you are capturing in that moment. This is what we call awareness- enjoying what we do.
If freemasonry has secrets, this is one out there for all to see; in a sense hidden in public until a passerby notices and begins to connect. We've made mistakes trying to understand what to do with it.We have manners that guard us against that. Where we get blind sided is dealing with the illusion. The illusion is about a quiet nature. While brethren are preoccupied analyzing to understand, they may appear aloof, haughty.
