    Back2Us Show_Equality in Higher Education

    in Education

"The most important quality of a doctoral program that is friendly toward lesbian and bisexual individuals is a collection of faculty and staff that hold among their core   values a genuine celebration of diversity, which, by definition, excludes them from holding heterosexism as a value. This quality speaks to a pervasive, all-encompassing recognition that everyone is not heterosexual, and it is that absence of heterosexism that, almost by definition, creates a doctoral program that is friendly towards and welcoming of individuals of any sexual orientation" (Nutt, Edwards, Reimers, Kams, Jackley, Frock, Maddux, Ruppenicker, & Beno, 2014).

I call the period of my life when I completed my first Ph.D in 2007, my "wake up era".  I was coming alive with the love of living in higher education as well as coming out into my own sexual orientation.  I was fully expecting to find a lot more students and faculty just like me; but, what I found instead was a lot of heterosexism.  That was seven years ago; and, now that Sharon is nearing the end of her doctoral program, we decided to talk about our experiences at two different schools in two different programs.   Has anything changed in seven years?

Tune in as we talk about what we've observed as doctoral students and I will share my experience as a practitioner in the field.  If you are LGBTQ and thinking about completing your doctoral degree, this is one show that you don't want to miss!

    Back2Us Show_The Pink Promise

    in LGBT

Tune in as Dr. Annise Mabry and best selling Author Sharon D. Smith talk about the Pink Promise, Breast Cancer Awareness, and community resources for not only Cancer Heros but also their support systems.

"Today marks the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It's a time when we celebrate all of our Cancer Heroes and the fight to end this disease. I get excited about this time of year because it gives me a chance to fulfill the many promises I made to my wife, LaShundria Dansby Smith, just before she died in 2012 from an aggressive form of breast cancer. I have not failed on any of those promises and I don't intend to.

You don't know the strength and courage it takes to travel this journey unless you've been through it yourself. You don't know what people are going through behind the smiles. This month, I encourage you to reach out to your friends, family, coworkers, etc and talk with them about breast cancer. Know your risks and get your mammograms done. If you need information, inbox me. Love up on somebody who may be going through therapy right now and celebrate those who are in remission.

We have to let breast cancer know we don't fight fair! With all of our resources, research, and progress made in the last 10 years, we're slowly kicking breast cancer in the azz! You can join the fight, too. Every day, I will tell you how." (Sharon D. Smith, Facebook Status Post, Oct 1, 2014)

    Back2Us Show: Educational Advocacy 101

    in LGBT

It's that time of year when everyone is on the hunt for the school supply list, the teacher wish list; and, that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle backpack that Target had online but can't locate in the store (oh wait, that's MY challenge at the moment).

Seriously, this time of year for many is filled with excitement but for children who learn differently and their parents--there is often very little to be excited about as the fights about homework resume.

According to a 2010 report from the National Center for Learning Disabilities, nearly 2.4 million students are diagnoised with LD and receive special education services in schools.

For parents trying to navigate this educational maze to obtain help for their child, it  is often described as the equivilent of attempting to climb Mt. Everest in flipflops.

What do you need to know to advocate effectively for your child? What is an IEP?  Who is eligible for a 504 plan? Is there really a difference between a 504 Plan and an IEP? What are the first steps in the IEP process? Does it really speed up the process to get your child tested outside of the school system? What are some types of things you as a parent or guardian can ask to have included in the IEP?  We're going to cover all of this and more!

If you have a child that you believe may need extra help in school to thrive then this show is for you!

We will have Licensed Psychologist Dr. Arcella Trimble as our guest to help navigate the waters on Educational Advocacy 101 for Parents and Guardians as well as blogger Karen Wesley Weaver.

Karen's blog, Confessions of An Asperger's Mom (http://confessionsofanaspergersmom.blogspot.com/) has been featured on Mamapedia and is listed on the Top Mommy Blogs http://www.topmommyblogs.com (yes, please go vote for Confessions of An Asperger's Mom).
