Bible Study in Judges 2 - Israel Rebuked, Joshua Dies, Israel Serves Baals

    in Religion

Today on Bible News Radio we're going to look at the history of Israel in Judges chapter 2.

This is a fascinating chapter because we see the Lord showing His love for Israel by rebuking her.  Then Israel repents and serves the Lord.  Joshua dies at 110 years old and then Israel starts to follow the baals again.   There are many lessons we can learn from the cycle of worshipping the Lord, falling into sin and then coming back to God.  May our walks with Christ remain faithful.

    Israel Serves Baals (Judges 2:11-23)

    in Christianity

    TEXTS

Then the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals, and they forsook the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed themselves down to them; thus they provoked the Lord to anger. So they forsook the Lord and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

The anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He gave them into the hands of plunderers who plundered them; and He sold them into the hands of their enemies around them, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies. Wherever they went, the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord had spoken and as the Lord had sworn to them, so that they were severely distressed.

Then the Lord raised up judges who delivered them from the hands of those who plundered them. Yet they did not listen to their judges, for they played the harlot after other gods and bowed themselves down to them. They turned aside quickly from the way in which their fathers had walked in obeying the commandments of the Lord; they did not do as their fathers.

When the Lord raised up judges for them, the Lord was with the judge and delivered them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who oppressed and afflicted them. But it came about when the judge died, that they would turn back and act more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them and bow down to them; they did not abandon their practices or their stubborn ways.

So the anger of the Lord burned against Israel, and He said, “Because this nation has transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers and has not listened to My voice, I also will no longer drive out before them any of the nations which Joshua left when he died, in order to test Israel by them...

Decide today to be committed only to God

    in Spirituality

Under the direction of Jezebel, the worship of Baal was prevalent in Israel. Jezebel had killed many of the Lord's prophets and replaced them with 450 prophets of Baal. The word "baal" by itself means "owner" or "lord," suggesting that the god Baal was regarded as the owner of a particular region. The local Baals were thought to control rainfall as well as fertility in agriculture and animals. Because of the importance of these things to survival in Palestine, the Canaanites went to extreme measures, including child sacrifice, to secure the favor of the Baals.
The three-year drought proved that Baal did not control rain. Now, at God's leading, Elijah would prove that there was only one God. The Lord wanted the people to forsake their worship of Baal and turn back to Him.
Idol worship is not something uneducated people took part in centuries ago. Many people worship idols today though they may not bow down to a graven image, they devote their affections to other things.
We are God's people We have been bought with the blood of Christ. We should recall, as Elijah did for Israel, all the great feats the Lord has done. We need to recognize who God is , then make the choice will be to love and serve Him with our whole hearts.

Vertically Striped Radio - Episode 96

    in Energy

The city of Fort Wayne is building a new city center, and the possible new name for it had Craig in a tremendous mood for the show. Although the Harry Baals Government Center is a long shot, here's hoping. Face and the Whale were on hand as we discussed the discomfort of shopping at Wal-Mart before extensively breaking down the Magnificent Seven of the Top Seven Secondary Simpsons characters. Craig had a quick edition of the Week in Wankery, and then signed off with a music recommendation of "A Girl and a Graveyard" by James Germain and the Grey Grey Days. Today's show was brought to you in part by a grant from Mike Dow. Remember kids, "Beware of Dow".

  • Time of Transfer "Passing The Baton To The Next Generation (Judges 2:6-15)" PT2

    in Christianity

We all need to be warned that if we aren’t careful, we’re going to lose our kids to the Baals of this world, the cruel masters to which so many of their peers are enslaved. And so, if we don’t want to bring distress upon our children in this life; if we don’t want to lose them to the gods of this world round about; if we don’t want to lose them to the fire of hell in the next world, then we had better learn how to pass on the baton of our faith properly to this next generation.
