    Authors on The Rise

    in Social Networking

Join us on Monday, August, 3rd from 8-10pm.  We will be speaking with Jerry Jackson.  After attending a DragonCon panel, he was inspired to start an Imprint, Starbase Phoenix Publishing, focusing on black authors and stories featuring black protagonists. It currently has one eBook, which he is the author of “No Good Deed” which can best be described as pulp high fantasy. They are working on a second title “NeoAfrica” by Ronald T. Jones.  He is married wife Luzviminda for 16 years and they live in Kennesaw, GA. He has two stepdaughters and 4 grandchildren.  Jerry will be joining us with an update on his progress and what authors who come to him for publishing can expect.  What he is accomplishing is amazing and you don't want to miss it.

We will also have some of the nominees for the Steve Harvey Neighborhood Awards.  The nominees are people in our community who have shown their character through their businesses.  The nominees work within our communities and the communities have shown their support by nominating them for these awards.  I had the pleasure of meeting almost all of the nominees at a send off dinner given by WHUR on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at the Bethesda Jazz and Blues Supper Club, hosted by Junior of the Steve Harvey Morning Show.  It was a great event.

Being A Young African American Lady In Today's Society

    in Social Networking

Join Authors on the Rise, where we will have young ladies/women speaking about society's pressures of engaging in intimacy, trying drugs, drinking and the size a socially acceptable lady should be.  Just like our young men, our young ladies/women need mentors, they need women to inspire them to reach for the moon and if they fall short, let them know that they are still amongst the stars.  Society and celebraties push, "being thin is in", but thin people are not always the healthiest people.  There is peer pressure, even though some of our young people are not intimate, they pretend to be, so they will appear cool.  Then put pressure or criticize thei peers who they know are not and bully them into doing something that they are not ready for.  As a community family, they need all the encouragement we can give, be a part of the HARMON.

Being A Young African American Male In Today's Society

    in Social Networking

Please join Authors on the Rise for a show that is both needed and necessary.  The show is entitled "Being a Young African American Male In Today's Society".  The show will allow young men to speak out on discrimination.  They will be able to let us know how they feel when they walk into a store and people look at them as though they should be there.  It will give them a change to speak out on the abuse and killings of African American males on a daily basis.  Our young men will be able to tell us what its like to grow up in a single parent household, whether its with mom or dad, and how society looks at them because of it.  This show is necessary, because our young men, just like their elders, don't always express themselves and they keep things that have happened, as well as their thoughts bottled up inside and we know that's not good. This is platform for our young men to express their thoughts, dreams and goals, and what they would do to aide in changing the way society think of them and how they would go about effecting those changes.  The call in number is 917-889-7765 and press 1 if you want to speak on the air.  I thank you in advance for joining us.

Author-Actor-Host Danny Gardner on creativity LIVE on Authors on the Air

    in Books

Danny Gardner impressed audiences with his performance on the 3rd season of HBO’s Def Comedy Jam (All-Stars Vol. 12). He has enjoyed a career as an actor, director and screenwriter. He is a recent Pushcart Prize nominee for his creative non-fiction piece Forever. In an Instant., published by Literary Orphans Journal . His work has appeared in Beat to a Pulp, Out of the Gutter and Noir on the Air. His debut novel, A NEGRO AND AN OFAY. He lives in Los Angeles and originally hails from Chicago. Danny is also the one of the rotating hosts on NOIR ON THE RADIO in the Authors on the Air Global Radio Network. From Danny: " When I was first learning how things work in published fiction, I made note of behavior. I’m a multi-talent with a delivery that can easily fill the room; however, the readings I attended seemed like sober affairs and no place for a ham. An author is introduced and then reads from his or her own work, which is normally followed by a polite Q&A session. Books are signed and attendees disperse. To this old performer, it’s rather straightforward and appropriate, as it’s a lot to ask someone to take a chance on a book."

He Said, on Next Steps Radio

    in Books

February and April are He Said/She Said months on Next Steps Radio!

Does gender count when it comes to writing thrillers? Are there differences between the two sets of authors and the books they write? And the biggie: is one gender more likely to be successful than the other?

First up, the men. Please join host and award-winning suspense novelist Jenny Milchman as she talks to three male authors about whether sex matters.

Matthew FitzSimmons was born in Illinois and grew up in London, England. He now lives in Washington, DC, where he taught English literature and theater at a private high school for over a decade. THE SHORT DROP, a political kidnapping conspiracy thriller, is his first novel.

Barry Lancet’s third book in his award-winning international thriller series featuring Jim Brodie is PACIFIC BURN. Previous books are JAPANTOWN (Barry Award Winner) and TOKYO KILL (Shamus Award Finalist). Lancet divides his time between Japan and California.

After graduating with a Journalism degree from the University of Oklahoma, Tim Washburn spent several years working in the television business both in Oklahoma City and Little Rock, Arkansas. His first book, POWERLESS, deals with a geomagnetic solar storm that destroys every power grid in the northern hemisphere, flinging the human race back to the Dark Ages.
