Somer Dawn: Army Veteran and Widow on a Mission to Combat PTSD

    in Writing

Somer Dawn wears several hats: veteran, widow, mother, nurse, author, PTSD awareness advocate, and founder of her nonprofit that supports PTSD victims and their families. Somer created True Blue Patriots Inc. to address the unaddressed issues concerning the consequences of PTSD sufferers. Its mission is simple: to support our soldiers and their families dealing with the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and be part of the solution. And to do so before the problem becomes too large within our growing civilian veteran population.

According to Somer, “PTSD is not a game. We want to set an example, not present another excuse.” Subsequently, Somer wrote a book, Halo Jumping, about the ravages of PTSD.

True Blue Patriots Inc. is concerned with:

Promoting healing and mental health awareness to combat the growing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) epidemic within our US Military.
Addressing the needs of military personnel and their families in times of crises.
Supporting resources designed to assist family and friends cope with the disorder, facilitate its diagnosis, as well as its treatment, and prevent/cope with the unfortunate loss of a loved one due to this illness.

Disabled Veteran Radio Playing Jams Tonight at Midnight

    in Music

The Jams are ready. I may hook my mp3 box and and when I get a request try to upload a song while another song is playing.

I do not know if I can do that but I have programmed some cool Jams and I won't be like Scott Shannon and tell you

what songs did not make the count down and only play like 15 seconds of the song. That's why I like playing pretty much the Radio Hit

version and play the whole thing. Also if you have a Disabled Veteran issue to air join the conversation. Thanks

I have included pictures of items for sale. I have 11 cabbage patch porcelain 1984 figurines along with Whose Your Mommy Comical T Shirts.

FFW #17: Stacy Bare - Army, Sierra Club Outdoors, Veteran Issues, Health

    in Culture

This week's warrior is Army veteran Stacy Bare.

Stacy Bare is a skier, climber, mountaineer, and sometimes surfer who served one tour of duty in Iraq as a Civil Affairs Team Leader after being recalled from the Individual Ready Reserve. He received his commission into the United States Army from the University of Mississippi and is currently Director of Sierra Club's Mission Outdoors program. Through direct programming, public education and advocacy, Mission Outdoors combats the growing divide between America and the outdoors by increasing opportunities for all to improve their overall well-being by exploring and enjoying the natural world.

The goal of Sierra Club Military Outdoors is to ensure that service members, veterans, and their families have the skills, exposure, knowledge, and confidence to access the great outdoors. Time spent in nature not only promotes mental health, emotional resiliency, and leadership development prior to deployment, it provides invaluable know-how to help returning vets enjoy and engage with nature upon returning from deployments. Many veterans experience difficulty adjusting to civilian life after leaving the service. Time spent outdoors eases the transition and improves both mental health and social skills. Providing service members, veterans, and their families with quality outdoor experiences will help foster the development of a new generation of Sierra Club leaders and supporters from within the military and veteran community, including family members who will work to actively achieve the Sierra Club's mission and become outdoor leaders in their communities.
