Did you know that the majority of Freedmen's Bureau records are now digitized and available online for free, as well as the records of other institutions that served newly-freed African Americans during Reconstruction? Angela Walton-Raji and Toni Carrier have built a new website called "Mapping the Freedmen's Bureau - An Interactive Research Guide" (www.mappingthefreedmensbureau.com) to assist researchers in locating and accessing records of the Freedmen's Bureau, Freedmen's hospitals, contraband camps and Freedman's Bank branches. Researchers can use the website's interactive map to learn which of these services were located near their area of research interest. If the records are online, the map provides a link to the records that tell the stories of newly-freed former slaves in the American south. The goal of this mapping project is to provide researchers, from the professional to the novice, a useful tool to more effectively tell the family story, the local history and the greater story of the nation during Reconstruction.
Angela Walton-Raji is an author, genealogist, guest lecturer and producer of the weekly African Roots Podcast and Toni Carrier is the Founder of LowcountryAfricana, a free website dedicated to African American genealogy and history in SC, GA and FL.
Genealogist Angela Walton-Raji has committed herself to sharing information with the descendants of the Freedmen of Indian Territory--which is now Oklahoma. She is the author of the book Black Indian Genealogy Research: African American Ancestors Among the Five Civilized Tribes. The book serves as a guide to researching the history and lives of the 20,000 Freedmen of Indian Territory, who have been deleted from American history. She is also the author of the http://african-nativeamerican.blogspot.com.
The Dawes Commission, named after Henry C. Dawes who chaired the commission, consisted of a process that would lead to a redistribution of land to those who already owned it among the Five "Civilized" Tribes. Understand that land was held in common by the Five Civilized Tribes. The Dawes Enrollment process was created to determine who would be eligible for allotted parcels of land. Eligibility involved providing "proof" that one had been a part of the tribe for several decades, and especially in those years immediately following the Civil War. So one had to prove that one had been a part of the Indian Community since 1866. For those whose ancestors were enslaved by members of the Tribes, (the Freedmen) they had to often provide proof that their former enslaver was a member of the tribe.

Lindenwold, NJ – In our fast-paced world it seems there’s no longer any time to be introspective. There’s no time to ask, “What am I lacking? What do I need for myself to feel better and do better?” We have to look at our bodies as a complete system: if one thing isn’t working right, then nothing else will.

“I’m passionate about helping people restore and maintain their health and well-being so they don’t need pharmaceuticals to manage health issues for the rest of their lives,” says Bernice.
The consummate health care professional, Bernice has been a nurse and nurse practitioner for 25 years. According to Bernice, health coaching is the space between a person who needs assistance and traditional medical care. Some of these individuals suffer from hypertension, obesity, stress and anxiety.
“In my other life as a nurse, it was too late for prevention. We were managing diseases,” says Bernice. “I tend to gravitate to those people because I understand physiologically what’s going on with them and I have an understanding of what medications they may or may not be on. I can recommend changes to their diet that won’t compromise their current health conditions.”

New Cumberland, PA – Living with addiction can place families under incredible stress. The entire family becomes absorbed by the problem as it slowly spins out of control. But there is help.
Angela Jakubowski is the founder and lead interventionist for Restorative Interventions, a faith-based organization specializing in family recovery for drug and alcohol addiction. Restorative Interventions believes that through the resilience of the family and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the intervention process can guide families to effectively motivate a resistant loved one enter treatment. Through this process the family finds healing, freed from the bondage of addiction that has held them captive, often for generations.
“We begin where the family and the client is ready and willing to begin,” says Angela. “My goal is to penetrate with truth and help the family communicate their hopes and desires and needs and get their loved one into treatment."
According to Angela, the intervention utilized by Restorative Interventions is not an event like what you may have seen on A&E’s Intervention. Restorative Interventions employs an intervention model known as Arise, which is invitational only. An addicted loved one is invited to a family meeting where professionals have been brought in to facilitate the process.
“People invited to this process are always taken aback by how the family has come together out of their love for the individual — often despite existing broken relationships within the family system,” says Angela. “They have to hear the message. There is an answer. There is hope.”
