North Florida’s Mixed-blood Indian People, Rediscovery of a Forgotten People
In the early 1800s, dozens of Siouan-speaking Cheraw families, including Catawbas and Lumbees, fled war and oppression in the Carolinas and migrated to Florida; just as native Appalachicola Creeks were migrating away. Being neither Black nor White, the Cheraw descendants were persecuted by the harsh “racial” dichotomy of the Jim Crow era and almost forgot their proud heritage. Today they have rediscovered their past. This is their story.
Creek Eastern Siouan Cheraw Indians, generally located in the panhandle of Florida. Related groups (Porch Creek, Redbones, Brass Ankles, etc) in which we can establish a surname connection locally or by association later (Mt Tabor Community).
The Apalachicola River Indian Community Conference is a non-profit community-based tribal organization that works for the political, social, legal, and spiritual welfare of the Creek/Eastern Siouan Cheraw Indian people in the panhandle of north Florida. Its focus is to foster tribal cultural identity and unity, documentary historical research into our origins and history, and provide venues for communication, awareness, and growth. We are the descendants of the Indian people who lived in the 3 settlements whose history is documented in the “Our History” part of this website. These are surnames in our community:

I have a dream...Celebrating Our 50 Years of Jubilee!
Our forefathers and mothers planted trees from which we gather fruit, and dug wells from which we quench our thirst. Civil Rights Activist marched for us, died for us and pleaded for our equality.
So what are we leaving behind for our communities today? What are we fostering in the minds of our Black children? How will we strengthen our famillies and our communities?
Fifty years ago, Dr. King's "I Have a Dream..." Speech debuted in Detroit and transformed a nation. Today, we Celebrate our 50th Year of Jubilee and join in that movement of teaching us all to evolve in our beliefs, values and purpose for elevation of our consciousness into the greatness that lies in the Human Spirit.
Our ancesters from Africa knew the power of connection to the Divine, while honoring the human-ness in each other. I invite you to remember the greatness of our people, and let's have conversations that inspires us all to take action to "Heal what's hurting our Hearts and our Black Community."

December 15, 2014 should go down as the day when criminal injustice reigned supreme. Rev. Edward Pinkney was sentenced to 2.5 to 10 years in prison for alleged election fraud and Gov. Don Siegelman was denied his freedom while waiting for his appeal hearing on January 13th.
Ben Ptashnik and Andrea Miller speak with activists and supporters of Rev. Edward Pinkney and former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman.
This Christmas Reverend Pinkney will not be home with his family. He has been sentenced for up to 10 years in Prison on trumped up political charges because he has stood up to the 1% against the Whirlpool Corporation in Benton Harbor.
He is in effect a political prisoner. Please stand in solidarity with Rev Pinkney and his wife Dorothy.
Don Siegelman was the extremely popular Democratic Governor of Alabama; there was talk that he could be a contender in the 2004 Presidential primary and stop the Republican takeover of the South. Karl Rove and his operatives knew they had to stop Don Siegelman and they went to extraordinary lengths to destroy his career.
