African Americans of Alexandria, Virginia
Beacons of Light in the Twentieth Century
Char McCargo Bah, Christa Watters, Audrey P. Davis, Gwendolyn Brown-Henderson and James E. Henson Sr.
This show will explore a new book written about Alexandria’s twentieth-century African American community. Experience the harrowing narratives of trials and triumph as Alexandria’s African Americans helped to shape not only their hometown but also the world around them. Rutherford Adkins became one of the first black fighter pilots as a Tuskegee Airman. Samuel Tucker, a twenty-six-year-old lawyer, organized and fought for Alexandria to share its wealth of knowledge with the African American community by opening its libraries to all colors and creeds. Discover a vibrant past that, through this record, will be remembered
Char McCargo Bah is a professional genealogist for the Alexandria Legacies—Freedmen’s Cemetery Descendants Project of the City of Alexandria, an author and a public speaker. Audrey P. Davis is currently the acting director of the Alexandria Black History Museum and has been employed by the City of Alexandria for over 20 years. Gwendolyn Brown-Henderson is a native Alexandrian and retired United States government worker. James E. Henson Sr. is a retired attorney who grew up in Alexandria. Christa Watters is a freelance writer and editor who has lived in Alexandria for thirty years. This group came together to document the history of African Americans who were agents of change and served as Beacons of Light in Alexandria in the twentieth century.
Talking 2 Angels
the wisdom of your heart
O.M.G. Events with Alexandria Damouni The way the bride touches the delicate fabric that will be transformed into a table cover; the way the kaleidoscopic burst of colour from carefully picked flowers fills an opulent room; these are just some of the images that sustain my passion. My name is Alexandria and my spouse, Mark, and I, co-own O.M.G. Events, a full-service event company specializing in custom event design.
With over 10 years of experience in design and certified with the Wedding Planners Institute of Canada, I decided to launch O.M.G. Events 3 years ago. I live life looking for a spark of inspiration to bring to each and every endeavour with O.M.G. Events. The J'adore Wedding Gala held in March 2013 was co-hosted by The Wedding Planner Magazine GTA and O.M.G. Events. It was truly a labour of creative love for me to bring about the theme of the event inspired by Marie-Antoinette and her French royal court of the 18th century.
As I always say, this is more than just an event company. O.M.G. Events is a reflection of my heart, my soul, my tears, and even my blood. My spouse and I have created a dream together and one that we want to bring to you. We persevere by the "Do what you love and love what you do" motto. The company for us is our life and we would be honoured to make your event a part of it.
On this evenng's broadcast, Anna Yeisley talks about Virginia's Gubernatorial Race. Frustrated with the lack of direction and vision for Virginia, Anna Yeisley, your host of INDEPENDENT THINKER puts on her Acting Constitution Ambassador of Virginia hat, and lays out a plan for Virginia, that if heeded would move Virginia into a new American century of peace and prosperity.
1) Prepare for impending crisis or event (whether caused by financial collapse, natural disaster or terrorist attack) by:
a) establishing alternative competitive currencies to the federal reserve note, namely and electronic gold currency as advocated by Dr. Edwin Vieira (Harvard scholar who lives in Front Royal) or advocating a debt free currency that Bill Stills (another Virginian) is traveling the world advocating?
b) revitalize Virginia's civilian militia, a voluntary "body of persons' trained to arms. A unpaid civilian militia could be of GREAT help to maintain order and distribution in a crisis or an upheaval of any kind. Considering the number of armed people in Virginia, would not a program to train and organize a body of people trained to arms (as quoted in the Virginia Constitution, Section 13) the proper, natural and safe defense of a free state especially in the event of an national, state or international crisis, whether we speak of financial, natural or terror?
c) Cultivate Industrial hemp as a new industrial commodity base with its promises of not only non toxic plastic and paper production but the fresh oxygen, carbon dioxide reduction in producing bio fuels from hemp (Henry Ford made an entire autombile out of hemp plastic and fueled it with hemp derived bio fuel in the 1940's.
If you agree send a note to your state legislator.
Angel Chatter with Chris Alexandria
Chris has been intuitive and sensitive for as long as she can remember with a deep yearning to serve others and help them within their lives. In fact during a session with the guidance counselor, she blurted out she wanted to be a psychologist. Now this may not sound note worthy, but it was an inspired comment as the angels came through her to speak the loving truth as this was not part of the family dynamics or her universe.
When you begin to truly take care of yourself, put yourself first and honor your dreams, yearnings and goals, the universe hears you and obeys.

Special Guest: Virginia Schenck.
From both straight-ahead jazz and free improvisation to the centuries-old tradition of circle singing, Virginia Schenck has proven herself to be a singer of enormous range. But it’s jazz that makes her soul soar. Give her a Leonard Cohen tune or Bonnie Raitt ballad, and she’ll mix up the rhythms or add a vocal twist, and the song becomes her own.
A nationally recognized music therapist and educator, Virginia has returned to her jazz roots with a CD that showcases her crystal clear voice and easy swing style. Titled “VA,” it features an original composition plus a collection of jazz standards. And just as she likes to do from the stage, Virginia pays homage to women composers, including groundbreaking vocalist and civil rights leader Abbey Lincoln.
Virginia-Lee is a happy little girl, especially when doing something that she loves. Her happiness bubbles out, and in all kinds of ways - from head to toe. She might grin or wrinkle, maybe wiggle, chuckle, or perhaps even giggle. No matter how hard she tries, she just can't hold it in. At that moment, she knows and everyone can see that Virginia-Lee is doing something she loves and that makes her happy as can be.
