Growing up under her grandmother's watchful, wise tutelage, My Lewis Haley spent her early childhood in South Charleston, WV before her parents moved the family to Columbus, OH While working on her doctorate in Communications and African American Studies at the Ohio State University, My was inspired by a speech delivered on campus by author Alex Haley. After achieving her goal of earning a PhD, she set out on her next goal: to work with the renowned author.
Impressed by My's drive and talent, Alex Haley gave her a major assignment; to assist him in writing the remaining two-thirds of a book that was long overdue to his publisher. Within a matter of months together they completed the work and that book, Roots: The Saga of An American Family, catapulted Alex Haley to international fame. My and Alex married in 1977, and over the years collaborated on many projects, including the miniseries Roots: The Next Generation. After Alex's death, My Haley immersed herself in writing pieces based upon her Generation. In 2010, Brooklyn co-wrote and recorded five original songs with Grammy Award winning producer Alex Cantrall and Jeff Hoeppner of Radio Nation, best known for the hit song, Jo-Jo’s “Leave (Get Out),” Beyoncé’s “Sweetdreams,” and the work they’ve done for Pink, Justin Timberlake and Kelly Clarkson. Brooklyn’s efforts will culminate with the release of her new album along with the music video for her song, “Crash” which is slated for 2012. In 2011, Brooklyn embarked on the seven-city, five-state No Bully Tour, featuring a mixture of Radio Disney and Nickelodeon stars hoping to send a strong anti-bullying message to teens. Clara Barton, Mary Boykin Chestnut, Elisha Hunt Rhodes—all these women will never be forgotten. They may have been already gone, but their great roles during the Civil War are immortalized for the years to come. But then again, there are still plenty whose bravery and valor have never been honored, more so explored. A courageous woman of today decided to tell such tale. The literary industry has been graced by the likes of My Haley. Born in South Charleston, West Virginia, she grew up to the stories and guidance of her grandmother. Then she later moved to Columbus, Ohio, where she finished college and eventually moved on her master’s and doctorate degrees, especially in African American Studies and Communications. It was during this time that she caught the attention of an up-and-coming prolific author Alex Haley. He had a deadline to beat, and he was not even halfway through. He therefore needed someone to help him out: My came to mind. She therefore spent a lot of days co-collaborating with Alex Haley on Roots, which catapulted him to fame and led to a mini-series. They got married and became a formidable writing team, collaborating on more projects until Alex died. My was left to tackle her own work, and the result was just as magnificent as the Roots.
