Depression, suicide, relapse and the Third Step are the topics for God Box Mike and dougananda for their March 21, 2015 Blogtalk Radio broadcast. Depression, cross-addictions and suicides are the ugly ugly side of recovery. Depression hammers alcoholics and addicts who slip back into their addictions and even some who despair despite being in recovery. Suicide often looks like a way out.It is hard to "turn it over" to a higher power when you've been living for years in the negativity of addiction. Let's face it, being clean and sober requires a mammoth effort to find a transformation that will bring about serenity in the face of all the problems stacked up against recovering people.
Suicide is a hot topic these days. National Public Radio reports that suicide was the third largest cause of death for people between the ages of 10 and 19. Anyone with time in recovery has known at least a few people who took their own lives, either before or after a relapse. Mike and dougananda have known a few. They as for only one thing: Please don't do it.

God's Solutions for Today's Problems #11
Our passage from the Word of God today is Jeremiah 17:7. It reads, "Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is."
Our quote for today is from Hannah Whitall Smith. She said, "If I am walking along the street with a very disfiguring hole in the back of my dress, of which I am in ignorance, it is certainly a very great comfort to me to have a kind friend who will tell me of it. And similarly it is indeed a comfort to know that there is always abiding with me a divine, all-seeing Comforter, who will reprove me for all my faults, and will not let me go on in a fatal unconsciousness of them."
Our problem today is "The Problem of Addictions in Your Life" (part 5) from the book, "The Guide to Biblical Counseling" by Dr. Tim Clinton and Dr. Ron Hawkins.
Isaiah 5:11 says, "Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!"
Many alcoholics are so dependent on alcohol that they begin early in the morning and continue drinking until late at night. The tragedy of addiction is that it controls and dominates the desires and choices of the addicted. The even greater tragedy is that addicted people reject the Lord's work in their lives. God alone can provide the lasting comfort, joy, and relief that people mistakenly seek in alcohol.
Hosea 3:3 says, "And I said unto her, Thou shalt abide for me many days; thou shalt not play the harlot, and thou shalt not be for another man: so will I also be for thee."
Addictions are powerful enemies to our relationship with God. Whether the addiction is to alcohol, drugs, sex, gambling, web-surfing, shopping, or whatever, addicted people can attest to their seeming inability to control their desires...
The latest edition of the St. Christopher's Inn Recovery Radio Show highlights Step 4 of the 12-Step programs. Host David Gerber is joined by St. Christopher's Inn staff members Michael Boccia and Robert Watson as they break down the meaning of Step 4 "Made a Searching and Fearless Moral Inventory" and discuss why it often times represents a stumbling block in recovery.
"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."—Not Albert Einstein*
In the interest of demonstrating our sanity, Jeff, Matt and I went to a SMART Recovery meeting. Then we talked about it.
*The earliest verifiable instances of the quote are:
Alcoholics Anonymous / Step 2: A Promise of Hope (pamphlet) / 1980
Narcotics Anonymous / The Basic Text of Narcotics Anonymous / 1981
In which Jeff, Matt and Chris discuss getting sober, staying sober, triggers, N.A., rehab and more!
Living with an Addiction is like sailing on the ocean without any rudder or the ability to raise or lower the sails. On good days - you have no idea of where you are headed - and you can try an hope that it is the direction you want to go - and you think you are enjoying yourself. However on those days when the wind kicks up or turns into a violent storm - holding on to a vessel that can sink at any moment should be enough to motivate anyone to seek recovery. Ahhh - but once the winds die down and you realize that you are still alive - some weird voice in the back of your brain tells you the worse is over and you once again continue your journey into a potentially torrential future.
Join me - Dan Czuba and my many various guest Hosts and Callers as we candidly discuss what it takes to get and stay sober in todays world of growing temptations.
