Lee Ritenour made quite a splash four years ago with his A Twist of Jobim CD, in which he pulled together a rotating cast of all-stars to offer a program of contemporary jazz updates of classics from the Antonio Carlos Jobim songbook. He’s used the same formula for his latest offering, A Twist of Marley.

It's such a privilege to have the friendship of Norman Woods - who is also known by his Jazz Poet moniker. He has changed it a few times but this current name will stick (I'm convinced!) N-Side The Healer seems right. Especially when you get to know Norman :) From the San Francisco Bay area, he is also a screenwriter and a music publisher. And has had epiphanies in his life that beg to be shared. Like homelessness. And true psychological challenges. In his poetry, N-Side shares those struggles as well as his triumphs. He asks questions - and sometimes he answers them himself. But he wants US to think. Way beneath the surface. Norman's not much for "surface." When you've been on the street, you get to see people at their best and worst. He has never forgot that lesson or any other that he has learned. Hear it for yourself via "Living in the Poetry Hotel" - we'll hear three tracks from this latest project by our beloved friend.
Kim Waters joins us on 8/20! This immensely popular saxophonist is celebrating 25 years of giving us joy - that instrument has produced four # 1 albums and more than a dozen # 1 singles. Kim is from Maryland and folks in the state can tell you - he's a "Hometown Hero!" And it's terrific to know that he returning to this region for a special date at The Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia. Here's the reason why: Kim has a new CD on the way! Called "Silver Soul", it's full of original music - our "hero" wrote ten of the twelve tracks :) Sharing the immensely warm vibe on the album: Kim's talented wife, Dana Pope, as well as Eric Roberson and the teen actress/singer, Zendaya. We'll hear classic tracks from Kim and get the lowdown on his new & exciting life! C U in The Chat Room!
For those who were paying attention (ahem!), you might have seen that Kim Waters was scheduled for 8/19. As it turned out, Kim wrote to apologize - because he discovered that his plane to Washington, D.C. was going to be IN THE AIR at the time of our interview. Or close to it. Sooooo, yours truly figured that the only solution was to create a special show just for Kim. Hence, our two hour "Hybrid Jazz" on Wednesday!
Gracious, there's a LOT going on with Kim since we last spoke. And he'll fill you in on ALL of it. A beautiful wife, a new life, a 25 year anniversary in the music business, a CD dropping next month - and a terrific event planned at one of our popular venues in the region. I TOLD you!
Kim's used to this excitement, though. Of course he is - this is the consummate saxophonist who has had four # 1 albums, more than a dozen # 1 singles, and plays to packed and appreciative houses wherever he goes. He was raised in Maryland - and is considered a beloved "Hometown Hero" in this state. Although he lives in Texas now, he finds time to return to his roots whenever possible.
Get ready for the energy that you'll hear when Kim visits - you've been given a lot of reasons as to why - but let's get specific about this upcoming musical project. Called "Silver Soul", it's Kim at his best - and he has fantastic help to deliver the message. The golden throated magic of Eric Roberson, the beautifully youthful exhuberance of Zendaya, and the romantic partnership of Kim's lovely wife, Dana Pope - it's all wrapped up with a velvet bow - and given an extra touch by one of Kim's exquisite daughters as musical accompaniment. NOW you know why this visit from our friend is important. Because it's all about FAMILY :)
The fun at one - Kim joins us at two p.m. on 8/20!

As a young girl Unita was surrounded by music. Her father and uncle both were musicians of the highest caliber, and music was part of her everyday life. Exposed to all kinds of music including jazz, classical, big band, and folk music, Unita began to write, sing and perform at an early age.
After singing around her hometown in South Carolina, Unita moved to Atlanta and began a career as a folk singer in clubs and various venues. She would also do the occasional radio commercial, and began her serious writing of original music while working as an administrative assistant by day to cover her living expenses.
Soon Unita met her husband Joseph Akins, and together they formed their independent record label, HeartSong Music, in 1997. Together Unita and Joseph have created and produced original music for CDs, video and film. Unita was invited to write and sing on popular artist Herb Ernst’s two albums released by Mystic Visions, Bringers of the Dawn and Angels and Ecstasy, and a wonderful friendship was formed. Unita then invited Joseph and Herb to collaborate on her album Through the Veils, and from this collaboration, extraordinary music was born. Her debut album Through the Veils was recorded and released to rave reviews in the late 90’s. “Unita’s mesmerizing voice is utterly breathtaking,” said NAPRA Review.“Unita’s warm grace, beautiful voice and touching words are a delight,” said Steve Ryals of NAR.
