Community Investor with your host Larry Muck discusses the affordable housing crisis in America. The surge in recent years in our rental population appears unabated, but the formation of affordable housing stock has NOT kept pace.
The recent financial crisis has spurred calls for reform and greater accountability in housing. Although the present focus may be on sub-prime loans and foreclosures, our country also faces another type of housing crisis: a profound lack of affordable housing. The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program ("Section 8") addresses this dilemma by distributing government rent subsidies to qualifying families. Although the federal program is voluntary, several states and cities have passed laws prohibiting landlord discrimination against Section 8 recipients.

Martin Luther King said, "We must now learn to live together as brothers, or we will perish together as fools."
Since the time of the Civil Rights movement in the 1960's, there have been concerns in Chicago's suburbs for fair and affordable housing. Dr. King even spoke at the Winnetka Village Green in 1965 to thousands of people.
Founded In 1972 through an inter-religious group of clergy leaders, the Interfaith Housing Center has worked tirelessly for more inclusive communities, and more housing for those of moderate and low incomes.
Gail Schechter, Executive Director of Interfaith Housing Center has been a leader in fair and affordable housing advocacy, discrimination investigation, tenant and community organizing, and public policy research and development.
So how far have we come? What more needs to be done? How can we help bring the vision of affordable housing to thousands of people across the Chicagoland community?
Join us for this insightful interview with the award-winning social justice advocate... the "Champion of the Public Interest" leader, Gail Schechter.
Let us not forget Dr. King's words... "We must now learn to live together." How long do we have to wait?

Where does our outrage meet the challenge of change?
“Sankofa” teaches us that we must go back to our roots in order to move forward. That is, we should reach back and gather the best of what our past has to teach us, so that we can achieve our full potential as we move forward. Whatever we have lost, forgotten, forgone, or been stripped of can be reclaimed, revived, preserved, and perpetuated.

Today I will be joined by Executive Director, Michele Giordano and Director of Policy and Research, Nan Strauss of Choices in Childbirth. Last fall, CIC introduced an important piece of research. The Doula Report identifies the value of doula support in achieving critical improvements in maternity care in line with the priorities identified in the Affordable Care Act. The report examines the landscape of birth in NYC including health disparities based on race, ethnicity and income as well as challenges for doula work.
Choices in Childbirth is a non-profit organization focused on ensuring that all women have access to maternity care safe, healthy, equitable and empowering. Their mission is to promote evidence based, mother-friendly childbirth options through public education, consumer advocacy and pioneering policy reform. They seek to improve maternity care by providing the public, especially childbearing women and their families with the information necessary to make fully informed decisions relating to how, where and with whom they will give birth. www.choicesinchildbirth.org

"the daily complaint"
Every weekday we answer client complaints on The Daily Complaint to provide direction and resources for both the person complaining as well as other consumers experiencing similar issues whether it be mortgage fraud, loan servicing escrow issues, loan modification runarounds or denials, short sale refusals, deed in lieu negotiations and credit card debt collector abuses and fraud violations.
I routinely look for posts to answer in hopes that it will not only bring optimism to those homeowners and borrowers in distress but also some basic information to assist in fighting the banks that are "too big to fail" like Bank of America and Citi but yet don't appreciate the bailout that we provided in their time of need. The debt collectors like Ocwen and Nationstar are simply just piranhas but they can be beat at their own game too just like the big banks can be defeated.
We are committed to answering consumer complaints and addressing everyday credit and debt issues on The Daily Complaint and I thank you for your continued support!
We hope you enjoy the Show...
