Recapping Super Bowl L, our reaction to the 2016 HOF class and latest NFL news.
Jeremy "The Impact" York wraps up the season that was in the NFL. What happened in the SuperBowl and how does it affect the offseason? Who were the big winners at the NFL Awards? Plus he breaks down a few positions for the Falcons and what they should do in the foreseeable future! Join him in the FalconZone, presented by Impact Media!
Opening show, 2nd try. We will discuss the shows purpose and talk a little football
Our guest is Luke McAvoy, a defensive lineman for the University of Minnesota from 2011-14. He wrestled with a secret for years -- he was gay. McAvoy hid it fearing rejection but when he summoned the courage to come out, he was met with acceptance and support from teammates.
"It was the acceptance from my teammates that I will remember," he writes. "Being part of a family that did just about everything together for four years was amazing. Being part of a family that turned out to be so much more accepting and supportive than I could have imagined made me realize that I had nothing to fear. The only thing I should have been afraid of was what was in my own mind."
We discuss McAvoy's journey and Outsports' trip to the Super Bowl.
I was staying in Battambang, Cambodia. While I was there I had to visit one of the area’s most famous attractions, the bamboo train. The bamboo train gets it’s name from the bamboo deck or floorboard used that rests on top of the wheels that can transport anything from chickens and rice to people. In Khmer it’s called a Lorry and has been used since the Khmer Rouge shutdown of most regular train service in the country.
The Bamboo Train Station. Now where is the first class lounge? I could use a bloody mary about right now! Waiter? Actually the place is quite charming and surprisingly not touristy feeling at all. At least not at the starting point in O Dambong, about 4 km from Battambang.
The bamboo train solves the biggest problem of a single track train line. What do you do when two trains meet from opposite directions? In the case of the bamboo train? Simple-move one off the track. This experience alone makes this one of the world’s all time great train rides.
A little heavy on the photo gear I know but I’m a one man show right now.
Farewells from the departure crew and we’re off.
The bamboo train was not the first flatbed type service in Cambodia. During the civil war of the 80’s and 90’s flatbed trains were used as mine sweepers ahead of the rest of the train. Service was free, risky but popular.
And here we go about 3 minutes into the ride and our first stop. Wow, now that’s taking service station to the next level. The first lorries or bamboo trains were actually hand driven with a pole, kind of like an Italian gondola. Small motorcycle or tractor engines, like this one were added later. The wheels? They’re actually from abandoned tanks! Yes get your ass off the deck so I can do my job, thank you! Excerpts from "Great Train Rides Of The World-Cambodia's Bamboo Train".
The NFL changed the extra point to be equivelant to a 32 yard field goal. Only five teams went through the season without missing an extra point. Mason Crosby converted all 36 of his extra points, and made 86% of his field goal attempts. He also converted four of five fields goals from beyond 50 yards.
Changing field position is a key component of the punting game. When a drive ends, the punter has the ability to pin the opposing team inside the 20, or flip the field position to help the defense. Tim Matshay struggled with consistency throughout the year. His gross average of 43.9 ranked 24th, but his 40.2 net average ranked 13th. Matshay benefited from good special team tackling which can mask a poor punt. He only placed 18 punts inside the 20 yard line and 14 punts rolled into the end zone for touchbacks.
It was bowling-shoe ugly as Dre predicted, with defense ruling the day, and it featured by far the worst numbers for a Super Bowl winning QB. But the Broncos suffocated the Panthers, making a winner out of Peyton Manning and losers out of Dre and Jay. The boys discuss what went right for Denver, what went wrong for Carolina, why the commercials were so terrible, and anything else pertinent to the Big Game.
