This is our final show with Deanne Adamson. It has been such a pleasure and a wealth of information on this much needed topic to bring awareness to the public of what else is available. For the final talk in our addiction recovery series Deanne Adamson of Being True To You Integrative Recovery Coaching brings the conversation to the next height in recovery to help you optimize your life after addiction. There are many ways to optimize your life starting with the principles and practices you use, to the rituals and regimens you put into place, to the flexibility and flow you are able to achieve, to the social network and setting you surround yourself in, and to the enjoyment and contentment you cultivate through your activities. Your experience through recovery is less about your circumstance and more about your perception and response to your circumstance. You can tune in and listen to the show at www.blogtalkradio.com/lindasconscioustalks or you can call in and ask questions at (347) 850-8423.

Our guest this Morning is Marc Lewis, Ph. D., author of The Biology of Desire: Why Addiction Is Not a Disease. This amazing book is chock full of the latest neuroscience, telling not only how brains get addicted to drugs but also how they recover and heal, showing that neuroplasticity is a two-edged sword. A great antidote to the drug war propaganda put forth by NIDA.

Carol the Coach knows what damage Sexual Addiction can do to a relationship. To offset the damage she inteviews founder and Clinical Director of the Center for Relational Recovery in Leesburg Virginia, Michelle Mays LPC, CSAT who has over 13 years experience in providing individual, couples and group therapy to those struggling with sexual addiction, trauma and relationship issues.
Michelle is a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist trained under Dr. Patrick Carnes. She is also trained in Post Induction Therapy by Pia Mellody for the treatment of relational trauma. Michelle is sought out as a writer, trainer and speaker on sexual addiction, partners of sex addicts, the developmental model of trauma treatment, and relationship issues. In addition, she mentors and supervises upcoming therapists.
Michelle will be talking about addiction as an attachment disorder (intimacy disorder) and the way in which addicts often attach to the substance or process they are using compulsively as a substitute for meaningful and consistent attachment in their relationships and the way that this is set up in childhood, and how recovery must address attachment and learning how to ‘do relationships’ if it is going to be successful long-term for the person.
Al-anon can help families trying to understand drug and alcohol addiction and get their loved ones to quit. Al-anon uses the 12 steps to teach family members about addiction and to train us to avoid enabling the addiction. We learn to love the addict but to HATE their addiction.
Members of Al-anon also act as sponsors who are readily available to answer any questions that come up while we're trying to help our loved ones to end their drug addiction. How do we get them to stop using and go into treatment is the most common problem that Al-anon helps us to understand and address.
This week on Recovery now we discus how Al-anon works and why we benefit from it if we attend.

For much of the past century, scientists studying drug abuse labored in the shadows of powerful myths and misconceptions about the nature of addiction. When scientists began to study addictive behavior in the 1930s, people addicted to drugs were thought to be morally flawed and lacking in willpower.
As a result of scientific research, we know that addiction is a disease that affects both the brain and behavior. We have identified many of the biological and environmental factors and are beginning to search for the genetic variations that contribute to the development and progression of the disease. Scientists use this knowledge to develop effective prevention and treatment approaches that reduce the toll drug abuse takes on individuals, families, and communities.
Dr. Nora Volkov is the director of the National Institute of Drug Abuse will teach us today about this important topic.
