Academy Award Nominee for Captain Phillips Dana Brunetti

    in Entertainment

NWP welcomes the Executive Producer of the Academy Award nominated movie "Captain Phillips", Dana Brunetti!

Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates.  It is — through director Paul Greengrass’s distinctive lens — simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller, and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization.  The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama’s commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two time Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage.  Phillips and Muse are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips’ unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, 145 miles off the Somali coast, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control.

Dana talks about the filming of this movie and his other upcoming projects including Evel Knievel, House of Cards and Fifty Shades of Grey.

Academy Award Apocalypse Now Composer Randy Hansen

    in Entertainment

Welcome the extrodinary Randy Hansen to NWP!

Francis Ford Coppola personally called Randy Hansen in 1979 to compose music for his upcoming fillm, Apocalypse Now.  Randy accepted and composed the first 17 minutes of the soundtrack that won the Academy Award for Best Soundtrack in 1980 and remains a cult classic today.

Born December 8, 1954 in Seattle, Washington Randy is a U.S. guitarist, best known for his emulation of Jimi Hendrix. He clearly has a bit of physical resemblance to Hendrix in his facial features, and carries that resemblance further by emulating such signatures of Hendrix's style as playing a guitar with his teeth or behind his back. Randy is one of only a couple guitarist offically endorsed by the Hendrix family.

Hansen's high energy guitar work has earned praise from fellow Dutch-American, legendary guitarist, Eddie Van Halen (in Guitar Player magazine), among others. He also was a good friend of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan (writing a song about him called "Texas Twister" from his Old Dogs New Tricks CD). He has toured and played with literally hundreds of famous musicians and groups.

I talk to Randy about "the call" from Coppola, his career and all the amazing artists he has worked with over his career. PLUS lets hear more stories from the rock & roll road!

In the second half of my show, I welcome Caspian Coberly.  Caspian is the Jr. High guitar phenom heading out on tour with some of the biggest names in rock and roll!

Charlotte Crossley from the Academy Award-Winning Movie Twenty Feet From Stardom

    in Entertainment

Neil Haley, The Total Tutor host of the Total Celebrity Show, interviewed Charlotte Crossley to find out details about the documentary, her experience filming it, and what it was like to be part of an Oscar winning film.

Through hard work and determination, Crossley has been blessed to maintain longevity in the entertainment business. As a singer, her music credits include working with the likes of Chaka Khan, Luther Vandross, Lainie Kazan, Muddy Waters, Sister's Love, Boz Scaggs, and Hiroshima. As an actress, she has appeared in films including The Preachers Wife, Beaches, Sister Act 1, Sister Act 2, When Harry Met Sally, Faster, and the Emmy Award-winning HBO film Behind the Candelabra. Her most recent film, the Academy Award-winning documentary 20 Feet From Stardom, was directed by Morgan Neville. It reveals the untold stories of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century.

“It is wonderful to be part of academy award-winning documentary," said Crossley. “ We told Morgan this piece was Oscar worthy, so get ready to walk and get that statue. It sets the bar for achievement for the rest of your life.”

During the interview, Crossley explained that the film is a documentary story of 6 background singers. The documentary covers 50 years of background singing, showing how they all got their start. The movie discusses the struggles, the high lows, about being forgotten, and always being 20 feet from the star. She also talked about how music was made and how black singers went to where the work was, not vice versa.

“Being a background singer we had to cover the stars,” Crossley said. "We covered the likes of the Rolling Stones and Michael Jackson.

CEO of Simply G Media, GJ Reynolds said, "Charlo stayed the course, and ended up landing on a star."

I'm diving in with some of The Academy Queens and asking questions like, "What was it about Gina's program that had you say, "Yes!"?" as well as, "What were your challenges in letting go of the "practical path" and how did you handle them?" and "What is your best piece of advice for women who are ready to break free of the practical path, discover their passion and share their truth?".
