Talking with two authors today. First, Tom Cohen, author of "Dogs with Old Man Faces", celebrating dogs with 'old souls'. Then host, Julie Forbes talks with Ardeth De Vries, President of the Board of Old Dog Haven, a non-profit that is a large network of foster homes that gets old dogs out of shelters! www.olddoghaven.org
Old Dog Haven: "We want our dogs to know that someone thinks they're valueable. Old dogs can become throw-away dogs that become expendable, for whatever reason, and it's very important to us that they're able to spend time with people who validate their importance."

Our focus for this broadcast is to bring awareness to Domestic Violence and to encourage advocacy for families who experience domestic violence.
Statistics for Domestic Violence:
Every 9 seconds in the US a woman is assaulted or beaten. Around the world, at least one in every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused during her lifetime. Most often, the abuser is a member of her own family.
Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women—more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined.
Studies suggest that up to 10 million children witness some form of domestic violence annually. Nearly 1 in 5 teenage girls who have been in a relationship said a boyfriend threatened violence or self-harm if presented with a breakup.
Everyday in the US, more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends. Ninety-two percent of women surveyed listed reducing domestic violence and sexual assault as their top concern.
Based on reports from 10 countries, between 55 percent and 95 percent of women who had been physically abused by their partners had never contacted non-governmental organizations, shelters, or the police for help.
The costs of intimate partner violence in the US alone exceed $5.8 billion per year: $4.1 billion are for direct medical and health care services, while productivity losses account for nearly $1.8 billion.

BACKGROUNDS & ASSETT SEARCHES
We conduct all types of Backgrounds from locating missing persons (heirs of an estate) to loved ones and family members.
Missing persons and family members, we locate them by searching computer databases, searching prisons, homeless shelters, Salvation Army, Social Network Sites like Facebook, etc.
Once we locate that person, we make contact with them and make sure that they want to be contacted by the client?
Background checks are often requested by employers on job candidates for employment screening, especially on candidates seeking a position that requires high security or a position of trust, such as in a school, hospital, financial institution, airport, and government. These checks are traditionally administered by a government agency for a nominal fee, but can also be administered by private companies. Background checks can be expensive depending on the information requested. Results of a background check typically include past employment verification, credit history, and criminal history.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development reported that homelessness dropped by nearly 4 percent from 2012 to 2013, according to HUD’s Annual Homeless Assessment Report. The report found that 610,000 people were homeless in January 2013. Sixty-five percent were in shelters; the rest were living outdoors, either on the street, in cars, or in tents. Officials in more than half of 25 large and midsize cities agree. They reported a 3 percent rise in homelessness in 2013, according to a U.S. Conference of Mayors survey in December. Moreover, cities expect homelessness to spike in 2014 because of looming federal funding cuts in food stamps and the end of long-term unemployment benefits after Christmas, which could push those barely making ends meet into homelessness.
Tonight - we are going to discuss homelessness in America and why the homeless rate is increasing, what we can do to assist those that are experiencing homelessness and resources that are available. Our guests tonight are Dr. Margaret Lovejoy, Executive Director at the Family Place, a Day Center for Families Living Without a Permanent Home in St. Paul Minnesota and Nikki Johnson-Huston, Esq. who has an incredible life story to share with us.
Join us as this will be a compelling show.
Thank you for all of your continued support.

BOB DARBY AND LYNN EAGLE FEATHER, ADVOCATES FOR THE HOMELESS MENTALLY ILL - Thursdays, 3pmEST ~ Please call to speak on air at (347) 857-3293 for all broadcasts at "Human Rights Demand."
Darby studied in psychology and theology in graduate school. Darby has been an advocate for the homeless mentally ill for more than twenty years. He has a B.A. in psychology from Emory University. He is a former employee of Georgia Regional Hospital, Boston State Hospital, and New Hampshire's Hanover-Darthmouth Hospital. In 1994, he co-founded Atlanta Food Not Bombs. Lynn Eagle Feather is an elder in the Lakota Nation. She discusses homelessness, drug and alcohol addiction and its causes and effects among Native Americans and others. Eagle Feather has been a human rights advocate for over 10 years and was herself a homeless person at one point in her life.
Use this link to contact your officials http://www.usa.gov/Contact/Elected.shtml . Darby and Eagle Feather explain that many poor people and those with serious mental illnesses and addictions are deliberately rendered homeless in the United States of America. Sick people are deprived of psychiatric and medical health care services that would help them avoid imprisonment and harm while our communities are less safe than they could be. This is unacceptable. Voters should petition elected officials to improve treatment and subsistence opportunities. Contact Mary Neal, station director, at MaryLovesJustice@gmail.com or call 678.531.0262.
Today, host Julie Forbes talks with Christina Capatides with Muttigrees Curriculum. Muttigrees teaches kids in schools about compassion, empathy and diversity by telling them stories about shelter pets so they may see the world through their eyes. This helps them develop these skills for other humans too. Muttigrees is currently piloting a curriculum for special education classes as well. They've found their curriculum to be particularly powerful for kids on the autism spectrum.
