Trying something a little different, I share Part I of a historical account of how Americans, including Marylanders, who fought and died to help win World War I. (Part II will be on this week's Red Maryland Radio).
Memorial Day is observed every year on the final Monday of May to honor the men and women of armed foreces who had fallen in the line of duty . People visit cemeteries and memorials to honor those who have died in the military service. The United States flag is solemnly lowered to half flag staff position where it remains till noon.
Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration day, was initially intended to honor the fallen union and confederate soldiers in the Americal Civil War. It was later extended to honor and remember all the military personnel who had fallen in the line of duty.

Its Wedding season and more choices are too be made. Would you cut off your friend of almost 20 years to marry your fiance of 2 yrs who is jealous and controlling?
Lets look at this Scenario # - 52 Marriage Over Friendship.
Sometimes friendships don’t last. Derek and Kelly have been friends for over seventeen years and during those times they had a few moments between them, but nothing too serious. Derek was more of a mentor for Kelly as she moved up the professional ladder. Derek gave her the blueprint and she followed it and her career took off.
When Kelly started dating her soon to be insecure, controlling husband, Ralph, things changed between Kelly and Derek. One day Derek left a message from Kelly’s phone joking with her, something they both did to each other, and Ralph got the message and called Derek up going off without Derek getting in a word. But at times, Derek felt like he was going to have to step to Ralph and kick his ass, but he was more of a professional to behave like that.
The last straw to Derek and Kelly’s friendship ending was the fact that she got married. Derek did not get a personal invitation. Kelly sent the invitation to Derek’s mother who lives in another state. Derek felt like he deserved better and he did not attend the wedding and has not spoken to Kelly since then, which was over eight years ago. Is Derek wrong for feeling bitter?
Let's discuss this situation right now on COCKTAIL CONVERSATIONS on KLJN 107.7.

The Real Meaning and History of Decoration Day - Memoral Day
As I look around, it is very apparent too many Americans have forgotten (or were never taught) the real meaning and history of Memorial Day.
"Decoration Day" now known as "Memorial Day" had absolutely nothing to do with Mattress Sales or BBQ cook-outs.
Memorial Day originally called "Decoration Day" due to the practice of decorating graves of soldiers. It is a day of remembrance for those who have died serving America.
Memorial Day was started by former slaves on May, 1, 1865 in Charleston, SC to honor 257 dead Union Soldiers who had been buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp. They dug up the bodies and worked for 2 weeks to give them a proper burial as gratitude for fighting for their freedom. They then held a parade of 10,000 people led by 2,800 Black children where they marched, sang and celebrated. www.snopes.com/military/memorialday
Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country. http://www.va.gov/opa/speceven/memday/history.asp

Samiyyah Saafir-Muhammad was born Jacqueline Glover in New York City in 1951. After spending her early years in foster care, moving four times before the age of three, she settled in with her aunt, following her father’s passing.
While still in elementary school Samiyyah took an interest in helping other students do well, joining “The Future Teachers’ Club” in the fifth grade. As a high school student, Samiyyah became aware her people’s struggle for freedom—witnessing civil rights demonstrations, protests, assassinations and riots—and decided she wanted to help somehow. It was in this atmosphere that she went off to Northeastern University in Boston where she majored in Education. Her stay there was short-lived, however, as she was introduced to the teachings of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad and thereafter joined the Nation of Islam. Within the Nation of Islam’s Muhammad University, Samiyyah underwent educational training and worked as a teacher’s assistant.
Since 2005, Samiyyah has had the privilege of serving as the Directress at Muhammad University of Islam in Atlanta, which serves students from Pre-K to the eighth grade. She has been blessed to carry on the 84-year educational tradition, which was started by the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and his brave followers in the 1930’s.
A widow after 35 years of marriage, Samiyyah presently enjoys the blessing of her and her husband’s nine children: six sons and three daughters, all of whom attended or are attending HBCUs. Samiyyah has been a mother to not only her nine children, but also to her two stepchildren, her nieces and nephews, her eight grandchildren and countless other children and adults in the community who come to her for advice, wisdom and guidance. Affectionately called MamaMiyyah, Samiyyah’s house is never empty.
