in just a few days, it will be the 4th of July. Scenes of picnics, parades and fireworks will be everywhere. This is how we celebrate the holiday. It is the day we set apart from all others, to honor the anniversary of the birth of our nation. It is the day America declared our Independence. What is the meaning of Independence Day?
Do we ever reflect on the hardship and terror that the early Americans must have lived through day after day? Do we truly understand the hopes and dreams that lay secretly hidden away in the hearts of the people back then?
On July 4th, 1776, America started an insurrection against the king. Thirteen years before, back in 1763, England instituted a series of taxes and policies that not only hindered trade and economic growth in the colonies, but without representation in Parliament, also violated their rights as English subjects.
It took the early Americans 9 years to understand the futility of appealing to England, all the while enduring the heavy hand of the king. Committees were formed in 1772, exploring options for a Congress of our own. Our first Continental Congress convened in 1774. The following year, 1775, our Congress was declared traitorous and British troops, sent to quell the uprising met resistance from the colonial militia and the Revolutionary War began.

Crispus Attucks, a black man, was the first person killed in Boston. When tensions between British soldiers and an angry crowd resulted in the death of five people. March 5, 1770 was initially called the day of the Boston Massacre but the name was soon changed to Crispus Attucks Day. Crispus Attucks Day remained the chief American anniversary until independence was won and it was replaced by July 4. John Adams, our second president, called March 5, 1770 the most important event in American history. On October 13, 1888 a monument was erected on Boston Common called the Crispus Attucks Memorial.
Listen to the Reading of a vintage Script ~ Crispus Attucks (1723? - March 5, 1770) was the first American to die for the Revolutionary cause: "The first to defy, the first to die." Attucks was shot in the "Boston Massacre," the first fight leading up to the Revolutionary War.

This installment of The Forbidden Fruit radio show will ask the question, What to the black person is the Fourth of July?" This a slight variation on the title of Frederick Douglass's 1852 speach entitled "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?'How are black people of the United States connected to this anual celebration? What did black people have to celebrate on that original day back in 1776? How do you celebrate something that had nothing to do with you in the first place? I'm just saying....doesn't it make you go hmmm when you really THINK about it.
Let's talk about this here on The Forbidden Fruit radio show WORLDWIDE.
