Join hosts Tom Riddell and guest co-host Lisa Lea as they welcome author Samuel Hawley to The Writers Lounge. Sit back and relax as Samuel discusses what it's like to be a writer and he will also talk to us about his book: BAD ELEPHANT FAR STREAM.

Bad Elephant Far Stream is an animal story for adults, a novel about the odyssey of a circus elephant, told from her own perspective, through her own eyes. Inspired by the true story of the circus elephant Topsy, the subject of the 1903 Thomas Edison film “Electrocution of an Elephant,” it begins in the forests of Ceylon in the late 1860s with the capture of a baby elephant known to her own kind as Far Stream. She is taken to America chained in a ship, a journey of several months, and sent to the Adam Forepaugh Circus in Philadelphia. There, Far Stream embarks on a new life under the big top, appearing first as “Baby Annie,” then, when she grows bigger, as “Topsy,” part of Forepaugh’s famed elephant dancing quadrille. She crisscrosses North America for thirty years with the circus, experiencing hardships, kidnapping, escapes and adventure. But when she comes to outweigh her keepers by a factor of forty—it’s hard not to hurt somebody. It’s hard not to get labeled as “bad.”

Join hosts Tom Riddell and guest host Lisa Lea as they welcome author Larry Higdon to The Writers Lounge. Sit back and relax as Larry discusses what it's like to be a writer and he will also talk to us about his book: THE STORMS OF DELIVERANCE.

Johnson was living as an alcoholic in denial. He said he could stop anytime he wanted and this attitude prompted Katy, his ex-wife, who he still had feelings for, to write a letter telling him that she would always love him but their relationship was over because of his drinking. While struggling with the finality of the letter, Johnson is involved in an automobile accident that turns his whole world upside down. He soon experiences, what he believes, is time travel which launches him twenty-seven years into the future. There he deals with an “amnesia” that others have told him accounts for his inability to remember the twenty-seven years he has lost. In this new existence of time and place, Johnson has to work at making some sense of his life- and his past. He is haunted by spirits of his past, but he hopes that he can find a way to find worth and contentment in his life.  Then…another tragedy strikes.

THE WRITERS LOUNGE PRESENTS: JIM MURPHY

    in Writing

Join hosts Tom Riddell and Robin Eduardo as they welcome author Jim Murphy to The Writers Lounge. Sit back and relax as Jim discusses what it's like to be a writer and he will also talk to us about his book: My Life Before I Decided To Commit Suicide.

Jim starts off by telling us about his early life in Auburn, New York and describes, from a toddlers point of view, his adventures from back then. A defining moment of humorous horror for young James was when he was “.. sucked into child-eating chocolate quicksand..”. He fights and survives this ordeal and realizes at that point that he has super powers; just like his beloved dad.

From Auburn, New York the family finally decides to move to “The Valley” in Syarcuse, New York. This is where Jim learns to ride a bike dangerously and to involve himself in all of the naughty antics that young boys learn as they grow up- including smoking cigarettes for the first time and yes, getting caught by your dad.

Soon, with super powers still intact, his family makes another move just south of Syracuse to a small little community called Nedrow- or as many of its inhabitants like to affectionately call it: “Deadrow” or “Skidrow”.  This is where Jim finally learns how to turn into a bird and fly. He flies over the Onondaga Indian Reservation but eventually lands back down on the ground and his life moves on into his adolescent years. He recounts numerous stories as he grows up in Nedrow and one of the funniest is how he describes the birth of a very dear black friend of his who he occasionally fought with.

PIECES OF MY PATH- A MEMOIR

A TRIUMPHANT JOURNEY THROUGH THE "DARK DAYS" OF DEPRESSION...

Most mornings I would seek out the minor comforts of a lobby couch and I would lounge there; and as the crashing waves of gloom rolled deeply over me, I’d gaze out the window and watch the cars go by on the busy highway. People were contentedly on their way to work, oblivious to the agonizing despair and depression that were destroying people in the brown brick buildings that they were driving past.

The surrealistic detachment that I felt watching those morning commuters brought me to an even greater level of despair and hopelessness. I was so far removed from the hustle and bustle of that highway, and of a life that I once knew, that I might as well have been watching it all from the moon.

It was all so foreign to me to even imagine a life where I could once again get in a car and drive to work. I may have wanted that kind of a life back terribly, but I never envisioned ever having it again; not from the couch where I was laying.
