Criminal Injustice - The Case of Don Siegelman and Rev. Edward Pinkney

Activists and attorney Burt Wides talk with Joel about the case in Alabama and Benton Harbor, Michigan. Two innocent men are currently being held as politcal prisoners due to judicial misconduct.

Every American deserves the right to a fair trial with an impartial judge and jury.

Burt Wides is a pro bono advocate on a variety of national issues especially the balance of national security vs. civil liberties and human rights. He investigated Dick Chemey's War on Terror, including torture and extraordinary rendition for Congresman John Conyers. He has served as Chief of Staff or senior counsel for 3 US Senators and 2 Congressional committees.

Dr. Harris & Dr. Kennedy Why Is Rev. Pinkney Going To Prison For 10 Years

    in Politics Progressive

"Here, Whirlpool controls not only Benton Harbor and the residents, but also the court system itself. They will do anything to crush you if you stand up to them. That's why it's so important to fight this. I'm going to fight them until the end. This is not just an attack on Rev. Pinkney. It's an attack on every single person that lives in Benton Harbor, in the state and around the country." - Rev. Edward Pinkney

On December 15, Rev. Edward Pinkney, a leader in the struggle for social and economic justice for the residents of Benton Harbor, Michigan, was sentenced to serve up to 10 years in prison, on the basis of thin circumstantial evidence that a few dates had been altered on a recall petition against the city's mayor, James Hightower. The recall was prompted by the mayor's continued support for tax evasion by the Whirlpool Corporation, the Fortune 500 company and $19 billion global appliance manufacturer, headquartered in Benton Harbor.

As we wrote last week in depth, the politically motivated prosecution against Pinkney killed the petition to recall Hightower, who many believe would have been ousted due to his ongoing protection of Whirlpool's interests at the expense of impoverished Benton Harbor, which is over 90 percent African-American.

The Politics of Faith with Rev. Rodney Sadler

    in Politics Progressive

Host Dr. Rev. Rodney Sadler discusses Politics of Faith including progressive politics, American politics, culture, demographics, social justice, economic justice,  history, society, social change,  community action, community organization, and more!

This week's guests are Valerie Hugsy Bridgeman, Rev. Dr. Sam Nixon and Greg Jarrell. The panel will discuss the crises going on in Ferguson and on Staten Island. What does this say about race relations in America? What should the religious community be doing in response to it? What are the theological lessons that we could learn from the situation? What should we do as those who preach, and teach, and work as activist in the Christian community? What are the root concerns undergirding these issues?

Valerie Bridgeman is visiting professor of Homiletics and Hebrew Bible at Methodist Theological School in (sic) Ohio. She is a peace activist and advocate for human rights, and was inducted into the 2010 class of Martin Luther King, Jr. Collegium of Scholars at Morehouse College. She will become full time faculty at the school this coming fall.

Rev. Edward Pinkney of Benton Harbor joins Rev. Sadler to talk about how Whirlpool Corporation is attempting to silence him. Rev. Pinkney has been charged with election fraud and is facing a 46 year sentence.

Rev. Sadler will also be joined by Ellen Dunbar and Mohammed Konkarra of the US/Africa Ebola Working Group to talk about the International Weekend of Prayer and Action Against Ebola.

  • Christmas Eve Solidarity with Rev. Pinkney

    in Politics Progressive

December 15, 2014 should go down as the day when criminal injustice reigned supreme. Rev. Edward Pinkney was sentenced to 2.5 to 10 years in prison for alleged election fraud and Gov. Don Siegelman was denied his freedom while waiting for his appeal hearing on January 13th.

Ben Ptashnik and Andrea Miller speak with activists and supporters of Rev. Edward Pinkney and former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman.

This Christmas Reverend Pinkney will not be home with his family. He has been sentenced for up to 10 years in Prison on trumped up political charges because he has stood up to the 1% against the Whirlpool Corporation in Benton Harbor.

He is in effect a political prisoner. Please stand in solidarity with Rev Pinkney and his wife Dorothy.

Don Siegelman was the extremely popular Democratic Governor of Alabama; there was talk that he could be a contender in the 2004 Presidential primary and stop the Republican takeover of the South. Karl Rove and his operatives knew they had to stop Don Siegelman and they went to extraordinary lengths to destroy his career.
