Avoidable Deaths of Hernan M. Ossorio and Darren Rainey, Mentally Ill Americans

    in Politics Progressive

Americans with mental illness deserve at least the same respect for their right to life as American dogs have. Join us at (347) 857-3293 to discuss the deaths of Hernan Ossorio, 61, of Elliott City, MD, and Darren Rainey, a mentally ill inmate who died by torture (scalding) in Dade Correctional Institution in Florida in 2012. Rainey's demise was not publicized until 2014 when Harold and Windy Hempstead published it in the Miami Herald. Rainey's unrequited murder demonstrates America's need for treatment to replace punishment for severe mentally ill Americans and the necessity of demanding accountability of police and corrections officers who violate human and civil rights. Windy Hempstead will be our guest today along with Mr. Ossorio's daughter, Lillian. Mr. Ossorio's death underscores our nation's need for crisis intervention team (CIT) training for police officers who answer lunacy calls.

Mr. Ossorio apparently suffered a nervous breakdown when his business failed. Police were called when he was in a mental health crisis, and police allegedly killed him within minutes of their arrival to his home.
    http://www.wbaltv.com/news/police-identify-officers-man-in-ellicott-city-shooting-incident/27738342

Mr. Ossorio commented at the WBAL article: "He was my uncle and a very good person, he was not to kill him ... just because he was Latino, they think they can do whatever they want with them. He was a tireless worker, and most of his life, he lived in the United States. It seems wrong that this country will pay that. He had a family and like everyone was having bad times, but not to kill him, as they did. I hope justice is done and stop killing people because I love you dude. You're the best person I met, You're the best. Facundo - Argentina"

SPECIAL: Wednesday GOP Debate Edition of the Red Maryland News Hour

    in Politics Conservative

On this special Wednesday edition of the @RedMaryland News Hour:

Both the Republicans and Democrat candidates for Governor met in separate debates Monday at the Owings Mills studios of Maryland Public Television.  The debates were presented by the League of Women Voters, with MPT & WBAL TV. The audience, some of whom got to ask questions, were undecided voters.  While much media attention was on the Democrats' debate, which aired live in prime time Monday night, the taped Republican debate won't be televised until Friday night.

Why wait for a Friday night news dump cycle when we have the audio right now?

We present the debate with little commercial interruption, then we have some reactions from some of those who attended it.
