In January 2011 the Veterans Administration issued a directive stating that patients in pain control treatment who are participating in state marijuana programs “must not be denied VHA services.” Despite this, numerous complaints have come from vets being denied their pain medicines and other VA services because they find benefit to using marijuana medicinally.
The guests on the Monday, February 16 at 6 p.m. show have been working with government administrators and elected officials to insure that veterans are not denied VA benefits because they chose to use marijuana medicinally.
Michael Karwitz, Executive Director of Veterans for Medical Cannabis, is a disabled veteran who has benefited greatly from medicinal cannabis. He has worked with national and international organizations furthering the use of medicinal marijuana. Having met personally with many VA administrators, it was his efforts that led to the issuance of the directive protecting veterans from being denied VA benefits if they use marijuana.
Marcus Boyd is the Vice Chair of the San Diego Chapter of Americans for Safe Access. He has been denied his pain medication by the San Diego VA because of his use of cannabis and has called for action to protest his and other vets’ denial of services. Mr. Boyd also obtained a bit of notoriety when his grow was raided by a DEA agent wearing a shirt proclaiming "Fuck the growers...Marijuana is still illegal."
Ellen Komp, Deputy Director of CaNORML is a long-time activist working on both medical marijuana and legalization issues. She has been working with elected officials on the federal and state level to address vets using medical marijuana being denied VA benefits and has been involved in organizing veterans to protect to their rights to VA and cannabis benefits.
