Cade Courtley was born in Columbus, Ohio and raised in Boulder, Colorado where he spent much of his early life in the outdoors. He graduated from the University of San Diego with a degree in Business Administration and was commissioned (ROTC) into the United States Navy as an Ensign.
A standout from the beginning of his military career as a Naval Officer, Courtley was the Class Leader in his BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition/ SEAL) training. After 19 months, two Hell Weeks, boken left leg (twice), a broken right leg, and a fractured skull, LT Courtley graduated (CLASS 202) and became a Navy SEAL. He was then chosen to attend the elite SEAL Sniper school, privilege only given to a select few.
His strong background in military Special Operations made him the obvious choice to Host and Produce the Spike TV/Discovery International original series “Surviving Disaster” (2010) that to date has aired in over 150 countries. Author can now be added to Courtley’s list of accomplishments when the folks at Simon & Schuster decided to publish SEAL Survival Guide “A Navy SEAL’s Secrets to Surviving Any Disaster.” (2012) As well as Host of the original TV series “America Unplugged” (2014)

"Being in a ship is like being in a jail, with the chance of being drowned" – Samuel Johnson
For hundreds of years, the keeping of order and discipline aboard naval vessels was based around a delicate balance of privileges and punishment. Privileges included the daily distribution of alcoholic beverages such as grog (a mix of rum and water), while punishment included confinement (in prison barges or shackles aboard ship) and/or flogging. Given that life aboard a sailing ship was itself a form of confinement and imprisonment, the traditional means of maintaining discipline proved adequate during the Age of Fighting Sail. But the coming of the 19th century, and with it the revolutionary power of steam engines, completely change the character and demographic of enlisted sailors in the navies worldwide. Aboard the fighting ships of the U.S. Navy there were still rough men who performed primarily physical skills, but added to this were the first of a wave of technicians and mechanics. Nevertheless, these sailors still drank too much, fought and brawled, and periodically deserted their posts. It was for these men, the naval discipline afloat continued to be enforced.
And as the U.S. Navy expanded and contracted between 1850 in the 1930s, discipline afloat and punishment ashore also evolved. The first large U.S. Navy prisons were constructed, including the facility at the Portsmouth Naval Yard in New Hampshire, the largest such facility of its time. To learn more about the evolution and enforcement of discipline and punishment in the U.S. Navy between 1850 in the 1930s, join military historian, author and journalist John D. Gresham (@greshamj01) for Military Monday (#MilitaryMonday on @Writeswtream) at 1 p.m. Eastern. His guest this week is U.S. Naval Institute Press (USNIBooks) writer Rodney Watterson, author of the book Whips to Walls.

An amazing new technology under study by the U.S. Navy could produce boundless energy from salt water.
The science is clear...the oceans continue to absorb carbon dioxide, which is one of the reasons the seas are warming and rising each year.
Now the offending carbon dioxide can be taken directly from ocean water and turned into certain types of hydrocarbons. That means fuel to energize solutions.
How can we harness this new form of fuel, across the globe, to battle some of the adverse effects of rising seas?
Salt water intrusion, pushed by sea level rise into freshwater aquifers, is a problem that may have just found a partial and efficient solution.
The 2014 U.S. National Climate Assessment, released in July, points out, on page 401, "Sea level rise increases pressure on utilities-such as water an energy- by contaminating potential fresh water supplies with saltwater."
One proven method of producing drinking water from intruding salt waters is by using desalination plants. While such conversion facilities are getting more efficient, they still take a lot of energy to produce potable water.
Significanlty reducing energy consumption demands of desalinzation plants may now be possible.
Join Sea Level Rise Radio Host Mitch Chester as we explore how, within 10 years or less, desalination plants and municipal pumping stations may be able to use what is currently carbon neutral military technology to convert sea water into clean energy in the fight against some of the threatening effects of encroaching oceans.

Rev. Charles Koen, Cairo, Illinois activist, has been held in jail on trumped up charges for too long, say members of a committee working to set him free. His work as a community organizer, a political activist, and a champion of the rights of the oppressed is the real reason he was arrested and jailed, his supporters say. They add his list to a long list of men and women violated by the Criminal Justice system in America, as they plan rallies and marches to protest his incarceration, with the hopes of calling attention to the crisis of political prisoners still being held in jails throughout the U.S. The Committee hopes to take the case of Rev. Charles Koen to the U.N. and protest the abuse of his human rights.
