In January 2014 I did a show about Blackfish, the eye-opening documentary that uncovered and exposed SeaWorld for decades of animal abuse, neglect and kidnapping baby orca whales from their beloved families in the world's oceans. This was a very powerful 'first show of the year' that touched so many of you.
Since it's release and continued airings on CNN, Blackfish has been causing major waves at SeaWorld, including rapid declines in attendance and ticket sales and collective debates as to whether or not orca's belong in captivity. Millions of people from around the world have got onboard The Blackfish Effect, and continue to spread the world about the documentary in hopes of one day shutting down SeaWorld and releasing the orca's back into their natural environment.
Former SeaWorld trainer Samantha Berg (who was featured in the Blackfish movie) talks with us about her thoughts on Blackfish, SeaWorld and what will likely be the future for the beloved Tilikum. Samantha was most generous with her time and spent nearly 20 minutes with us when we were only scheduled for 3-5 minutes! Thanks again Samantha! For a remainder of the show, we'll opened up the phone lines to hear from you, and your thoughts about Blackfish & SeaWorld. Oh yes, and my Mother makes an appearance....

Listen as Christopher discusses the documentary BLACKFISH, which follows the journey of the orca known as TILIKUM, who was painfully kidnapped from his loving family in the sea at two years of age. BLACKFISH follows Tilikum's journey, and exposes SeaWorld for numerous counts of animal cruelty.
This is PART ONE of a series of shows Christopher will be doing about BLACKFISH.

Blackfish is a documentary Trailer for Movie: Blackfish: Click here!
They are an animal that possesses great spiritual power not to be messed with
All whales in captivity experience psychological trauma: It's not just Tilikum
These are animals that have highly elaborated emotional lives
There's no record of an Orca doing any harm in the wild!
In 1970 Divers used speedboats, bombs, & planes to heard & corral Orcas to abduct their young. The adults refused to leave while their young were being taken and 3 died in the nets, which they cut open, filled with stones, & anchored their tails to sink them. In 1976 Washington State evicted them forever from our waters. They abducted Tilikum from Iceland when he was only 2 years old. In 1991 he pulled a trainer to her death. It was buried in the news merely as a drowning and the park closed selling Tilikum to SeaWorld for breeding. More deaths have been attributed to Tilikum, who is now ketp locked up in a pen most of his day. Do you think it would be okay to be ripped from your family as a child and imprisoned for life?
This movie is worth watching to update your thinking about live animal theme parks.
When Young Orcas are ripped from their moms and pods the wailing and crying continues hopelessly lound and unceasing. Seaworld even did this with their captivity born Orcas further traumatizing the animals they were charged with better custodial care. It is a sham, a lie.
It is inhumane and Shameful. How is this different than Slavery in America? The Assimilation movement of boarding schools for Native American children, also ripped from their families? Yes they aren animals and it still unethical.
DAVID KIRBY is the author of 'Evidence of Harm,' which was a New York Times bestseller, winner of the 2005 Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) award for best book, and a finalist for the New York Public Library Helen Bernstein Award for Excellence in Journalism, and 'Animal Factory,' an acclaimed investigation into the environmental impact of factory farms which NPR compared to Upton Sinclair’s classic work 'The Jungle.' His latest book, 'Death at SeaWorld,' was previewed by Library Journal, which wrote: “Lives are at stake here, and Kirby can be trusted to tell the story, having won a passel of awards for his investigate work.” Booklist called the book “gripping” and “hard to put down.” - See more at: http://deathatseaworld.com/?p=828#sthash.IGHMi1HC.dpuf
Associate producer and Co-Writer Tim Zimmermann of Blackfish is the featured guest today. This documentary has a huge impact sociallyand financially. Bands are cancelling performances, Sea World stock prices have dropped, and students everywhere are boycotting Sea World. Blackfish on the short list for the Oscar's best documentary.
Blackfish tells the story of Tilikum, a performing killer whale that killed several people while in captivity. Along the way, director-producer Gabriela Cowperthwaite compiles shocking footage and emotional interviews to explore the creature’s extraordinary nature, the species’ cruel treatment in captivity, the lives and losses of the trainers and the pressures brought to bear by the multi-billion dollar sea-park industry.
This emotionally wrenching, tautly structured story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little we humans have learned from these highly intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals.
NOTE: This is the archived podcast of our interview. Please do not call in. Thank you for listening!
Last Friday, August 2, 2013, we were honored to have interviewed Gabriela Cowperthwaite, the director of the Sundance Film Festival favorite documentary, Blackfish. The movie is about Tilikum, the SeaWorld killer whale favorite who has been involved in several deaths over the years, including that of trainer Dawn Brancheau in 2010.
The movie's release forced SeaWorld to issue a response, which -- in light of the damning facts and footage in the film about how cetaceans are ripped from their families and social groups and forced to live and train in cramped, artificial conditions, essentailly in servitude in the name of entertainment -- could only charitably be described as both ineffectual and weak.
Listen to our rebroadcast of our interview with Ms. Cowperthwaite, and then head over to their website to find out if the film is being shown at a theater near you.
