Scientists have now proved categorically that stress is one of the major contributing factors in serious illness. We all of us need to do whatever we can to relieve stress. Kwanzaa was created to reaffirm and restore our rootedness in African culture. It is, therefore, an expression of recovery and reconstruction of African culture which was being conducted in the general context of the Black Liberation Movement of the '60's and in the specific context of The Organization Us, the founding organization of Kwanzaa and the authoritative keeper of its tradition. Secondly, Kwanzaa was created to serve as a regular communal celebration to reaffirm and reinforce the bonds between us as a people. It was designed to be an ingathering to strengthen community and reaffirm common identity, purpose and direction as a people and a world community. Thirdly, Kwanzaa was created to introduce and reinforce the Nguzo Saba (the Seven Principles.) These seven communitarian African values are: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith). This stress on the Nguzo Saba was at the same time an emphasis on the importance of African communitarian values in general, which stress family, community and culture and speak to the best of what it means to be African and human in the fullest sense. And Kwanzaa was conceived as a fundamental and important way to introduce and reinforce these values and cultivate appreciation for them.

Ailie Kerr is a Registered Nurse with a Master of Arts in Leadership and Training - Healthcare. Ailie's specialties are dementia care, behavioural interventions, violence prevention and personal safety. Her favorite things to teach are brain and behaviour, nonverbal communication, stress management and self-regulation strategies. She is deeply curious about what makes us human; stating "what shapes us, why do I react the way I do and you react the way you do?"
Learning the basics of being human has changed her life. Stating "I thought I "knew" the basics until I crashed into clinical depression and had to use the tools on myself. Learning what my emotions are telling me shifted everything."

Dr. Applewhite discusses the reasons why parents drop-out of college and the workforce. These are parents categorized as "non-traditional" adult learners/students that do not fit the stereotype held of the "traditional" college student. According to research, nearly two-thirds of "non-traditional" adult college students in the U.S. drop out prior to graduation! This is largely due to the lack of planning in all areas of life, sound advisement, and counseling intervention. Adult students with a learning or mental disability, who are parents, carry the additional responsibility of being a role model for their own children to finish school and learning to advocate for accommodations. Hear a unique insight on working parents with mental illness in light of Miriam Carey's shooting incident last year. This show will also shed light on the many alarming reasons Adult Learners/Students drop-out and struggle with the idea of going to back to school and finishing the courses started. Awareness is the first step needed to motivate and encourage those struggling to manage family responsibilities, stressful work and school schedules, and even non-visible disabilities.
