    The Poor are Shunned

    in Religion

James 5:1-5  1 Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. 2 Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. 4 Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. 5 You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.
I hear many conservative Christian leaders speak against the gays and the abortionist and the liberals but never against greed.   Throughout the Bible, God calls us to fight against corruption, and to stand with the poor.  The fight during this shutdown  is such a fight and I look to  scripture to make my choice.  Many elected republicans used the Christian Evangelical vote to gain there seat and I think it is time they started earning that vote.  If we believe ourselves to be Christian then we can't turn our back on scripture that is too difficult to put into practice.  The people are crying out and they are being ignored by the very people who claim to love God.  However, they don't love God or His people but they do love money.
Deut.24:14 Do not take advantage of a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether that worker is a fellow Israelite or a foreigner residing in one of your towns. 15 Pay them their wages each day before sunset, because they are poor and are counting on it. Otherwise they may cry to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin. Prov. 14:20 The poor are shunned even by their neighbors, but the rich have many friends. Prov. 21:13 Whoever shuts their ears to the cry of the poor will also cry out and not be answered.

Gender Journeys Part 1 ~ Introduction

    in Spirituality

I am almost at a loss for how to begin this...there are so many things I want you to know!

I want you to know that even though all people have marriage equality in all states they are still able to be denied jobs, housing and basic needs.

40% of homeless youth are LGBT...and the #1 reason they are on the streets is family rejection.

The suicide attempt rate for Trans is 41% as opposed to 1.6% for the general population.

Simply put, we have brothers and sisters amongst us who live their lives in pain, misunderstood and shunned. These are our children, our family, our future. How can we continue to deny love to those who need it so much? We don't need to change them. We don't need to pretend they are not there. We don't need to save them.

For they are Perfect, Whole and Complete as they stand. They are one of God's Creatures just like you and I. Come learn with us how to be better allies to those that still need help in the fight for Human Equality...

Evening with Ella Curry, Vanessa Riley and Nicole Hampton

    in Books

    Unmasked Heart by Vanessa Riley
Shy, nearsighted caregiver, Gaia Telfair always wondered why her father treated her a little differently than her siblings, but she never guessed she couldn't claim his love because of a family secret, her illicit birth. With everything she knows to be true evaporating before her spectacles, can the mulatto passing for white survive being exposed and shunned by the powerful duke who has taken an interest in her?

Glimmer in the Darkness by Nicole Hampton
For Shannon Johnson, full-time wife, mom and freelance writer, life as she knew it changed one spring afternoon with the ringing of her doorbell.  On the other side stood Vaneetra James, former mistress of Shannon’s husband, Daniel.  With two sons, Shannon resisted the urge to leave Daniel in order to keep her family intact. However, she refused to deal with the issues resulting from Daniel’s extramarital affair.
When Shannon thought her life couldn’t get any worse, a tragic turn of events in Vaneetra’s life turned Shannon’s already fractured world upside down, sending her marriage into an even deeper peril.
Feeling desperate and trapped, Shannon made a series of rash decisions that landed her in the arms of another man, bringing her already fragile world crashing downward.  Having to come to grips with the reality that the man she once thought was extraordinary was just ordinary, she had to trudge the road of forgiveness, while learning to love again and accept what she never imagined could ever exist.

  • Life Lessons with Gaines Baty regarding his Dad...Buryl Baty

    in Lifestyle

In a nutshell, the author, Gaines Baty, is a Dallas-area CEO and former all-conference football player at Texas Tech.  Several years ago, he began doing some research to write a book about the dad he never really got an opportunity to know -- All-American Texas A&M QB Buryl Baty.  Long story short, Baty was an all-everything quarterback and local hero who left A&M to serve in WWII.  He came back after the war in Europe, re-enrolled, won big, was drafted by the NFL's Detroit Lions, shunned professional football and chose instead to coach at an impoverished school (Bowie High) in El Paso. There, he took a group of Mexican American kids who'd never won a thing or really been fought for in any way (Baty took a real stand against some deep-seated bigotry before anything like a civil rights movement began) and not only greatly shaped their character, but led them to multiple championships.  Then, just as they were preparing to win a third, he was killed in an auto accident on a scouting trip. He was 30 years old (a few of the many pics we have are below).  Gaines was just three.

50 years later, Gaines embarked on a journey to get to know his dad and tell his story.  He interviewed dozens of his former players (who say he completely changed their lives and the course of destiny for their families for generations) and those he played against (he was a contemporary of guys like the legendary Doak Walker and Tom Landry and played them toe to toe.  Hall of Fame coach Raymond Berry says, in fact, that Baty was the best back he ever coached).  Sept.15 -- Oct. 15 being Hispanic Heritage Month, btw, and the ongoing immigration debate makes what he did all the more relevant.
The book comes highly recommended by the likes of Roger Staubach
