Scott Cluthe talks with Dr. Angelo Volandes, author of The Conversation, about the most difficult one spouses and/or family members will ever have to have: End of Life issues.
Dr. Angelo Volandes is a practicing internal medicine physician in the MGH Department of Medicine and a junior faculty member at Harvard Medical School. He is a Harvard College and Yale Medical School graduate.
Angelo continues his work surrounding Advance Care Planning (ACP), the process by which patients plan for future medical care under circumstances of impaired decision-making.
His study compared the preferences of patients after seeing a video depiction of a patient with advanced stage dementia, to those who received a verbal description of that health state.
There is an unspoken dark side of American medicine-keeping patients alive at any price. Two thirds of Americans die in healthcare institutions tethered to machines and tubes at bankrupting costs, even though research shows that most prefer to die at home in comfort, surrounded by loved ones.
Dr. Angelo E. Volandes believes that a life well lived deserves a good ending. Through the stories of seven patients and seven very different end-of-life experiences, he demonstrates that what people with a serious illness, who are approaching the end of their lives, need most is not new technologies but one simple thing: The Conversation. He argues for a radical re-envisioning of the patient-doctor relationship and offers ways for patients and their families to talk about this difficult issue.

Over the years critics have challenged the inspiration of the book of Revelation because its literary form is similar to a controversial body of writings known as apocalyptic literature. This type of literature was fairly common just before and during the apostolic era. Well-meaning authors, concerned about conditions in that era (200 B.C. to A.D. 100), often employed this dramatic form of writing to express their views on how the age-old conflict between good and evil finally would be resolved.
Grindhouse Veterans JOHN LINK & EDWARD X YOUNG angrily demand to know why The Academy Awards®, of February 22, 2015, in their televised Memoriam refused to acknowledge the passing of CARLA LAEMMLE, who died on June 12, 2014 at the age of 104! Carla Laemmle was the niece of Universal Studios founder, Carl Laemmle; her screen career spanned over 90 years from the silent classic, "The Phantom of the Opera" (1925), to her final role in 2014; and she has the first spoken line in the first talkie horror movie ever made, "Dracula" (1931). • Also snubbed, inexplicably, was beloved comedienne JOAN RIVERS, who hosted the pre-Oscar® Red Carpet show for years, in which she playfully mocked the pompous hoopla of the night. Joan Rivers omission from the tribute must have been borne out of revenge and hatred for her satire! • JULIANNE MOORE copped a Best Actress statuette for STILL ALICE; but she really deserved it for David Cronenberg's MAPS TO THE STARS. However, the supercilious & Scientologist-ridden Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences would never give kudos to a picture made by a foreign-based horror film director that horrifically castigates Hollywood Hierarchy for their decadence & depravity! • Independent horror movie producer, Cameron Scott joins John Link & Edward X Young in their rant.
Monday, February 23rd, Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson allowed a new law to block future anti-discrimination laws (to go into effect 90 days after the legislative session ends later this summer). While the premise of the new law known as SB 202 appears reasonable, in actuality this law allows legal discrimination for all non-protected classes.
In this episode, we hear from three Arkansas residents. Meet once again Scott Wyant, Founder of Straight Talk Arkansas, a website dedicated to Living liberally in the Mid-South.
We'll also hear from Cathey Shoshone and Christina Harrison. Cathey is the Co-Chair and Christina is the Founder of Arkansans For Equality.
Christina Harrison was born and raised in Arkansas. She founded Arkansans for Equality in 2011. As an ally, she had become frustrated with the bigotry she came across towards our fellow Arkansans in the LGBTQ community and wanted to do something to help. She began a ballot initiative to repeal Amendment 83 soon after. Christina is a combat veteran in the Army National Guard, and has just recently returned from a tour in Afghanistan.
Cathey Shoshone, also an ally, was born in Arkansas but has lived in several states around the South. She lives in Arkansas currently, She "liked" the Arkansan for Equality facebook page and volunteered to collect signatures for the ballot initiative. The ballot initiative became obsolete when Cheryl Maples and Jack Wagoner won their case in Judge Piazza's courtroom legalizing same-sex marriage. A federal case has also overthrown Amendment 83 to the Arkansas State Constitution. This decision has been stayed pending an appeal hearing.
