There is much discussion about the role that mental health issues have played in schools and communities that have been impacted by recent college campus shootings and other school shootings.
On this week's Know-It-All: The ABCs of Education, join us for an informative conversation with George Washington University Associate Professor of Counseling, Dr. Sam Steen. School counselors address mental health issues that arise and also support students' healthy social, emotional, and academic development. With his expertise and research on group counseling, Dr. Steen has identified key counseling strategies, particularly group counseling, that can produce positive outcomes for individuals inside schools and in communities as a whole. Dr. Steen will share with us his enlightening perspective on the benefits and necessity of having counselors and other mental health professionals in the school environment.

White skin people have more control. Black skin people find themselves being told what to do and when to do it. Well, it is not exactly this way but there was a time it was only this way. Inequality in America is about the color of a person's skin. There are other issues but the greatest of them all are the color of a person's skin. Today, there are those who would choose for it be back as it once was. The best thing to prevent America going backwards is voting. Lots of Americans do not vote. For whatever reasons lots of Americans will tell you they just don't vote because it doesn't do any good.
Well if you go into a store to make a purchse, you have to shop around and find what you want. You may see several different kinds but you have to decide which one is best for you, based on a variety of issues. If it turns out the brand you selected was a mistake, the next time you pick another brand. You continue until you have what is best for you. If you don't make a choice, you get what the store owner want you to have, or you get what is left over. This is a lot like voting. It does help when you made the choice. If the choice proves to not be best for you, you don't choose that one the next time. You have to come to understand come Nov 4, 2014 there will be voting across America. Every person of voting age and eligibility must help the country by voting. People need jobs, a raise in minimum wages, immigration reform, the right to vote is being threathened, medicaid expansion and even the newly Democratic ACA law, is under threat of being repealed. All these issues and many others are at stake of being lost to the millions of Americans if not enough Americans go out and vote Nov 4, 2014. Register to Vote. Get out the Vote. Vote in the midtern elections for Democrats for better choices after high school /college.

As we move into October which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month we want to explore relationships. The 'honey moon' phase where the grooming and courting takes place. We will explore how what appears to be a "great relationship" turns sour very quickly. How our perspectives and behaviors attract people into our lives and produce unhealthy relationship.s
Do you see yourself in a pattern of situations and cannot understand WHY this keeps happening to you? Why do I attract the same type of man/woman? Why do I give my all only to get nothing in return? As we approach October let's work through the stages of relationships; forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. In the month of October each week we will deal with the stages and conclude with how to exit/adjourn an unhealthy relationship and remain "whole" in the process.
