Coach Cafe' Radio is thrilled to welcome author and publisher Brenda Knight!
Brenda is a twenty-two year publishing veteran who started her career at HarperCollins, where she fell in love with publishing and had the thrill of working with major authors like Huston Smith, Paolo Coehlo, and Melody Beattie.
In 2008 she joined Cleis Press as associate publisher and sales manager. Not long after, she launched Viva Editions, a new imprint dedicated to publishing books that inform, enlighten, and entertain. The very name, "Viva!” is celebratory. And while Viva Editions is a line of books that are as fun as they are informational, the intention behind Viva is very serious—these are books that are truly helpful and intended to enhance people's lives.
An accomplished author, Brenda Knight wrote Women of the Beat Generation, which won an American Book Award. She is also the author of Wild Women and Books and other tomes. Knight volunteers for the American Cancer Society as a counselor for the newly diagnosed and leads a writing workshop titled “Putting Your Passion on Paper” at the San Francisco Writers Conference, Book Passage, and East West in Mountain View. Brenda’s book, The Grateful Table: Blessings, Prayers and Graces for the Daily Meal (November 2013), shares 365 blessings that light the way toward cultivating gratitude every day.
Her newest book is Be a Good in the World: 365 Days of Good Deeds, Inspired Ideas and Acts of Kindness, a book of good days filled with great ideas for making a difference.

According to the foreword of Gary Magenta's book, The Unbossy Boss: 12 Powerful Questions to Make You A Better Manager, "good managers listen, but great managers ask questions." These are the wise words of Gary Magenta's boss, CEO of Root Inc, Jim Haudan. Magenta himself adds that "great managers think of themselves as CEOs—Chief Engagement Officers. We've got a management crisis right now, and we've also got an engagement crisis. Could the two be linked? Tune in for the next installment of IT Life Radio, Wednesday May 20th at 3PM ET to find out.
Spoiler alert: I think they are related. And I think Magenta's book shows why.
Magenta says in the opening to his book: "A dictionary defines 'manager' as 'one who handles, controls, or directs.' I've never wanted to be handled, controlled, or directed. Have you? These words are about telling people what to do…the outdated style of 'yelling and telling.'" Magenta has a different plan.
What is it? Well, I'll let him tell you. Tune in to the show to learn:
A much better way to manage people
What a real manager does to make sure he engages people and serves the strategy of the company
How to use questions to be a better manager
Gary Magenta is a Senior Vice President of Root Inc., a consulting company that helps organizations execute their strategy through people. Magenta is the author of The Un-Bossy Boss. He is a frequent speaker at client events, industry conferences, and business strategy and human resources seminars. He has been recognized with a Stevie American Business Award for Executive of the Year. Gary is a Google fanatic and an unapologetic reality show junkie.

This week’s podcast comes courtesy of a blog posted by a young man studying at The Princeton Theological Seminary. He asks the question which titles our podcast: How Would Jesus Date? Intriguing to me. Even better are the thoughts he shares with us. Thank you, John Paul Cooke for sharing these thoughts and allowing me to use them in this podcast.
Born in Alabama, I was a gypsy for much of my life. I’ve been privileged to live in amazing places from Washington, D.C. to Orlando, FL, and even Minot N.D! I now make my home in the Chattanooga, TN area. I came here in 2000, and with the exception of a short sojourn away due to family responsibilities, this has become my adopted home town. (Check it out here.)
I have been a communicator all my life. Starting with theater in high-school and college, I have worked with people through sales and sales management or customer service positions for my entire professional life.
I am married with one son and a step-daughter and two granddaughters and a grandson on the way!
