Discussion about the rising sea levels in South Florida with Co Host: Monica Rosales Executive Director of DocMiami Film Festival
Juliet Pinto, Ph.D. is an associate professor in the Department of Journalism and Broadcasting in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Florida International University. She has developed classes in environmental journalism and communication, and has taken students to the Galapagos to report on issues pertaining to resource use and management there, as well as scuba dived down 62 feet to watch NASA astronauts train at the underwater Aquarius Reef Base in the Florida Keys. Her award-winning documentary on sea level rise, "South Florida's Rising Seas" aired in January 2014 and was repurposed by PBS NewsHour for their national newscast.
Kate MacMillin the producer of the award-winning documentary "South Florida's Rising Seas," has a B.A. from Boston University and a Master’s Degree in English Literature from Simmons College in Boston. She and three other SJMC colleges won the prestigious 2012-15 Challenge Fund for Innovation in Journalism Education grant to conduct community-engaged journalism about the threats of sea level rise in South Florida. MacMillin co-executive produced the HIV/AIDS documentary “Lessons from South Africa,” and the Web series “The Stigma Stops with Me.” This two-year AIDS initiative culminated in a one-hour special, “Tell Somebody: The New Face of AIDS,” which aired on WPBT, October 15, 2009.
John Englander, Oceanographer, consultant and sea level rise expert. His broad marine science background and degrees in geology and economics allows him to see the big picture on climate and look ahead to the large-scale financial and societal impacts, particularly as they relate to sea level rise.
When it comes to rising seas, the U.S. tax code is not ready. Neither are the IRS regulations.
The federal definition of "Casualty Loss" does not seem to cover owner's losses when ocean waters permanently steal properties.
Given established scientific projections concerning sea level rise, Congress needs to undertake a detailed review of the "casualty loss" term and broaden it to be ready for financial losses due to swelling oceans.
The tax code was never written to address sea level rise. Now it must.

When political figures avoid discussing sea level rise and climate change by proclaiming, "I am not a scientist," they need to complete that defense by stating, "but I am willing to listen carefully to them."
Failing to become educated on these important topics is essential, since many who use that excuse as a shield are responsible for our building codes, land use plans and developement strategies, all of which will affect us for years to come.
As government and private sector leaders grapple with the myriad of options to adapt to sea level rise, they must understand that the science of sea level rise research continues to increase, both in data, velocity, and understanding. The simple fact is, scientists know more about rising seas today than they did just one year ago.
That means laws, codes and regulations need to be continually updated as human understanding of rising seas advances.
Responsible leaders who work with scientists to understand what we do know, to properly plan for the middle of the century, will help fill the void in the incomplete defense, “I am not a scientist.”
Join commentator Mitch Chester for a discussion of how leaders and science must work together for the near-term future of vulnerable coastal regions.
