The story of Maroon communities in the Americas is one of the most important and fascinating chapters in the history of New World societies. However, it is a story that is not well known. Scholarly research and forensic archaeology are increasingly uncovering the evidence of Maroon settlements that have been a part of the US from the 1600s until the 1900s, but were hidden in plain view. Not only is little known about Maroon encampments established throughout the southern US, but our history books include little trace of the agency of Africans, who were forcibly brought to the US and enslaved, but employed military and diplomatic strategies in international relations, represented Native nations in negotiations with the US government, launched cottage industries, and built lasting communities long before the end of the Civil War.
Over Two hundred years ago, while the elite in New Orleans were making their usual preparations for Mardi Gras. Plantation owners were planning all-night parties, and the women of the house were looking forward to elaborate masquerades and balls.
What they didn't know is while they were planning for their annual carnival festivities, their slaves were planning a little something of their own.
On one fateful night, 500 armed slaves rose up from the plantations and set out to conquer the city.

Toni Morrison said, "The Empire of Necessity is scholarship at it's best. Greg Grandin's deft penetration into the marrow of the slave industry is compelling, brilliant, and necessary."
Join The Gist of Freedom Tonight www.blackHistoryBLOG.com as we discuss the book "The Empire of Necessity" with author Greg Grandin!
Tryal was the ship whose human “cargo” had rebelled, murdered their owner along with a score of other whites and demanded that Cerreño sail them back to Africa. Fifty years later, Melville made Delano’s story the basis of a short novel that he called “Benito Cereno.” Grandin writes about the unknowable inner lives of the Revolters, a reticence that elevates the novella far above the antislavery manifestoes of the slavery era in which the enslaved appear in one form of caricature or another. He conveyed the horror of slavery while looking unblinkingly at the reciprocal fury of self-liberated slaves toward those who had enslaved them.
Grandin …. reconstructing the world through which the revolters moved toward their strike at freedom, he has done more than any previous scholar — and there have been many — to illuminate the context of the work in which Melville confronted slavery without presuming to comprehend its vast ramifications. “The Empire of Necessity” is also a significant contribution to the largely impossible yet imperative effort to retrieve some trace of the countless lives that slavery consumed.
Duing this episode, I will compare the events of the 1992 riots in Los Angeles, California after the trial of the cops that beat Rodney King that lasted for about 3 days to the revolts in 2013 after the George Zimmerman verdict in Los Angeles.
Chris Jay & Al Suarez, hosts of Voice of Rebellion Radio out of Stay Bold Radio, will discuss in this 2 hour episide, the ongoing revolt where dozens of students have disappeared, some bodies found, all apparently killed at the hands of US backed far right drug traffickers at the behest of the government of Pena Nieto who stole elections and has brought Mexico to the brink of civil war. Do we have a revolution on our hands at the door to the US? Should American revolutionaries support the students, the Zapatistas, and others, united against injustice? Should we bring brigades? From Ferguson to Mexico City we see ongoing revolts, does our internationalism obligate us to fight for the Mexican people, whom had, had much of the their stolen by the US? Callers welcome
No. Not my words. But the words of a Gazan school teacher. This article [see previous hyperlink], published back in September and written by Mudhar Zahran, a Palestinian Jordanian dissident, has confirmed what I said, as Gazans anonymously condemn Hamas, as well as their backers like the Turkish terrorist Jihadi Erdogan and the evil terrorist regime in Qatar. The only question is: Where is the media on this? Why is the media silent? Where is Barack Obama in encouraging a revolt against Hamas the same way Reagan encouraged revolts in Eastern Europe against the Communist Soviet regime? Even before I saw this article, I've been discussing this phenomenon in Gaza. All this and more will be discussed, as I continue to show the hypocrisy of the anti-Semitic Israel-hating international community.

Jenny Smith Fletcher was the daughter of W. H. Smith, founder of Nicodemus. She was the first postmistress and schoolteacher in Nicodemus, Kansas. She was also one of the original charter members of the A.M.E. Church.
Formerly enslaved African Americans left Kentucky in organized colonies to experience freedom in the "promised land" of Kansas. Nicodemus represents the involvement of African Americans in the westward expansion and settlement of the Great Plains. It is the oldest and only remaining Black settlement west of the Mississippi River.

AUDIO BOOK READING - BREAKING THE CHAINS, Week 4 Chapter 4 Resistance
Although slave revolts constituted the most dramatic form of slave resistance, they were by no means the only method of reprisal. Arson proved to be an exceptionally effective and consequently frequent form of retaliation. In 1795, slave-set fires in Charleston, South Carolina, prompted the governor to declare a day of fasting. More arson there in 1804 resulted in the destruction of six ships and hundreds of homes. The problem of arson was so widespread that, in 1820, the American Fire Insurance Company of Philadelphia stopped issuing policies in the South.
Assaults and attempts at assassination were also common. In 1740, accusations that slaves were attempting to poison New York City's water supply resulted in widespread arrests and executions. Poison attempts were so frequent they were even referred to in the lyrics of at least one slave song. Vandalism and destruction of crops were also regular occurrences.
