Violet ReikiRadio -By Popular Demand-Dr. Sheldon Marc Feldman's interview

    in Health

Dr. Sheldon Feldman is chief of breast surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and assistant professor of surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons where he oversees the breast cancer surgery program at the Comprehensive Breast Center of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, and work in close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of radiologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, plastic surgeons and other breast cancer support staff.

Dr. Feldman is helping to pioneer the use of the ductoscope, a tiny endoscope inserted through the patient's nipple used for diagnosis, surveillance and treatment of cancer patients. His research using the device may help lead to a simple test for early diagnosis that could eventually be the equivalent of a Pap smear for breast cancer. Dr. Feldman anticipates that the intraductal approach will ultimately be used to treat early breast cancer as well as ablating the milk ducts to prevent cancer development for high-risk women as an alternative to mastectomy.

A leader in minimally invasive breast cancer surgery, Dr. Feldman was instrumental in developing the transmammary axillary lymph node evaluation (TANE) procedure, which requires only a single incision for lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy. He is also an expert in oncoplastic skin-sparing and nipple-preserving mastectomy.

His research interests are focused on preventing the disease through a better understanding of environmental toxins linked to breast cancer, including chlorinated pesticides, PCBs and PBDEs, and he is helping to investigate new biopharmaceutical treatments, including green tea extract and vitamin D.

Heroes of Katrina: Ten Years After-Al Johnson and Dave and Rose...NOLA musicans

    in Books

It was in December 1959 that Alvin Lee Johnson (born June 20, 1939) entered Cosimo Matassa’s recording studio.  He emerged from the studio on Governor Nicholls Street with what would be a belated hit song and a new name, Al “Carnival Time” Johnson.  Joe Ruffino produced the recording session for his Ric label and Carnival Time eventually joined Professor Longhair’s Go to the Mardi Gras and Big Chief, and the Hawkettes’ Mardi Gras Mambo as classics of the New Orleans Mardi Gras.

Johnson, like so many New Orleans musicians, grew up in the city’s Ninth Ward where he played trumpet and piano.  Born in 1939, he was influenced early on by Sugar Boy Crawford, Fats Domino, and Smiley Lewis.

Alvin Johnson, best known for his famous song, "Carnival Time," has been a New Orleans Mardi Gras icon for over 40 years. A Rhythm & Blues performer, Al is a New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival veteran and has worked with the likes of Aaron Neville, Oliver Morgan, Bobby Lonero as well as (the late Tommy Ridgley, Jessie Hill, Bobby Mitchell, Eddie Bo & Ernie K-Doe)

Al has performed on the "Louisiana Jukebox" TV program and been the star of a highly successful Louisiana Lottery Mardi Gras campaign. Al has also been the subject of numerous articles in Mardi Gras Guide, New Orleans Magazine, Offbeat Magazine, The Louisiana Weekly, The Times Picayune, and Gambit Weekly.

Also on the show, we have an amazing local New Orleans team...."Dave and Rose"...these fine local musicians will share their music and perspective regarding the 10 years after Katrina... Please join us for a fest of great music and perspective from NOLA musicians...

Youth Suicide Contagion: Implications for Colleges and Universities

    in Health

Presenter: Madelyn S. Gould, Ph.D., M.P.H. ,  Professor of Epidemiology in Psychiatry, CUMC/ Research Scientist, NYSPI.  Contact information: gouldm@nyspi.columbia.edu

Moderator:  Alison Lake, M.A., Research Scientist and Project Director, NYSPI

Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among college students in U.S., with approximately 1,100 students dying by suicide each year.  In addition, approximately 1% of undergraduates attempt suicide and 6-9% seriously consider suicide each year. It is recognized that youth suicide is influenced by many factors; research has indicated that one such factor is suicide contagion, a phenomenon to which teenagers and young adults are particularly vulnerable. Suicide contagion, sometimes referred to as suicide modeling, is the process wherein the direct or indirect knowledge of one suicide facilitates the occurrence of a subsequent suicide. There is ample evidence to support concerns about suicide contagion/modeling; several sources of this evidence will be presented.  Given the prevalence of suicide on college campuses, and the associated risk of contagion and clustering, it is imperative that colleges develop effective and comprehensive postvention strategies. This blogtalk will present specific postvention strategies that colleges and universities can use to limit the risk of further suicides through contagion.
