The Washington Nationals handed the Pittsburgh Pirates, who started the series on an eight-game winning streak, three straight losses. 9-2 today in the nation's capital with Gio Gonzalez earning the win and the sweep in Nationals Park. Bryce Harper and Yunel Escobar homered in a nine-run first.
The Pittsburgh Pirates came to Nationals Park with an eight-game win streak going, but Nats' right-hander Joe Ross and the Washington Nationals ended that streak with a 4-1 win in which the 22-year-old starter struck out 11 batters in seven-plus innings pitched.
Washington Nationals' starter Max Scherzer retired the first 26 batters he faced in the nation's capital before a HBP with two down in the ninth spoiled his bid for a perfect game. He settled for a no-hitter of the Pittsburgh Pirates. 6-0 Nationals in the nation's capital. Congrats, Max.
