The Brooklyn Nets are legitimate contenders to dethrone the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference – whether or not LeBron James wants to admit it – as Michael Scotto outlined in my latest column.
As for New York, the futures of Carmelo Anthony and Mike Woodson will be impacted heavily if the Knicks fail to reach the playoffs – a likely scenario.
With the Nets seemingly entrenched as the fifth seed and the Knicks on the brink of mathematical elimination, Scotto joined WFAN Sports Radio 660 AM and host Demetri Adrahtas. We discussed Brooklyn’s playoffs chances and the team’s x-factors, along with a blueprint for Phil Jackson to fix the Knicks and what to do with Carmelo Anthony.
We are locked and loaded for Diehard Sports Radio & its core show tonight in which we will react to the unpredictable outcomes of the 2014 NFL free agency season, Phil Jackson and his possible defection from the Los Angeles Lakers to the New York Knicks, where his professional playing career began. We will also continue to preview the upcoming 2014 Major League Baseball season with our division previews focusing on the American League & National League Central divisions plus much, much more. This is must-hear radio at its best and courtesy of Diehard Sports Radio.
If Phil Jackson takes over the New York Knicks, he'll have a tough job on his hands. He'll have to rebuild in free agency in 2015, because the Knicks have traded away their 2014 and 2016 first-round picks and their second-round picks in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. Plus Raymond Felton will still be under contract in 2015, ad will JR Smith.
Oh, and first he'll have to convince Carmelo Anthony to stay.
Plenty of talk on that, plus other subjects including an age limit of 20, and what it takes to have the longevity of a Dirk Nowitzki, a Karl Malone or a John Stockton, and more -- all in this podcast with 1280thezone in Salt Lake City.
Scott and Mike have a full plate Sunday afternoon. Among other things we will talk about Selection Sunday, the return of Phil Jackson, and the latest in NFL Free Agency. You can catch it all at 3pm ET on www.blogtalkradio.com/sportsweeklive.
Diehard Sports Radio is proud to present its core show in which we'll look at & react to Steve Kerr and his spurning of Phil Jackson & the New York Knicks to take the Golden State Warriors head coaching position. We'll also examine the 2014 NFL Draft, the NBA Playoffs, Shelly Sterling and her declaration that she will continue to own the Los Angeles Clippers and much, much more. This is must hear radio at its best.
What is Phil Jackson trying to accomplish by playing a game of chicken with Carmelo Anthony? Maybe, just maybe, he is trying to run him out of New York.
The new Knicks president had a lot to say about Carmelo in a meeting with reporters on Wednesday, and the most telling thing he said was that he hoped Anthony would stay true to his word and accept less than max money when the sides sit down to discuss a new contract after Anthony plunges into unrestricted free agency on July 1.
Anthony did indeed say he'd take less than the max if it would help the Knicks become a true championship contending team. But Anthony said it only once, at the All-Star break, and Anthony sometimes says things he doesn't really mean.
I would argue that this is one of those times.
Think about it ... Jackson has just given Rockets president Daryl Morey all the ammunition he needs to make the perfect pitch to Anthony, something that might sound like this: "Look, 'Melo, the Knicks aren't even willing to drop max money on you, and we are.
"Furthermore, the Knicks can't make you any guarantees about who will be playing alongside you a year from now, when they can finally go free agent shopping. In the meantime, you have to sit and wait and hope for the best while enduring another so-so season. We, on the other hand, can assure you that you'll be playing alongside James Harden and Dwight Howard immediately. So do you want to compete now? Or do you want wait another year and hope for the best from a team that is trying to make you take less than what you're worth?"
More on the 'Melo-Jackson, dynamic plus a look at several playoff series, in this interview with Xtra Sports 1360 in San Diego.
On this episode we discuss the hiring of Phil Jackson as the president of the Knicks. The Browns signed running back Ben Tate, I'll tell you why I'm not in love with it and Gene Simmons lead singer of rock group Kiss says non rock artist should'nt be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Phil Jackson to the Knicks was definitely the story of the day. When a guy with 13 championship rings takes on a new job, there's no getting around the importance of the moment.
But there are 29 other teams making news of one kind or another, and I found time on 1280AM in Salt Lake City to deviate away from Jackson and discuss Coach of the Year, the sleeper teams in the East and the West, and the debate over whether Blake Griffin has become a more worthy MVP candidate than LeBron James.
Phil Jackson can run the New York Knicks if he wants to. That is the word on the street this morning, although he will NOT become their next head coach. For insight into the reasons why, check out this column from Charley Rosen.
But if he accepts the job, he is going to have his work cutout for him. Although the Knicks have won three straight games and are still in contention for a playoff spot in the East, they still qualify as the most disappointing team in the entire NBA for the 2013-14 season.
And moving forward, the cupboard is bare. The Knicks have traded away their first-round draft picks in 2014 and 2016, along with all of their second-round picks from 2014-17. If Jackson is going to come aboard and make changes, his fist order of business will be to keep one thing the same -- convincing Carmelo Anthony to remain in New York after he opts out of the final year of his contract.

If New York is going to make a splash in free agency, it won't happen for more than a year. That's when the contracts of Tyson Chandler and Andrea Bargnani come off the cap.
But a hiring of Jackson could tip the balance in New York's favor this summer when Anthony will be courted by the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers, among others. More on the Jackson possibility in this podcast with Jody MacDonald of CBSSportsRadio.
During a roundtable NBA discussion on TheOpinioNationNetwork , Jabari Davis, Jamieson Welsh, Twan Staley, and Jory Dreher were joined by NBA historian/author Roland Lazenby following the news of Los Angeles Lakers’ Head Coach Mike Brown being fired on Friday morning.
Lazenby has been a fixture around NBA locker rooms for the past four decades, and is a close personal friend of Tex Winter and Phil Jackson. Lazenby has credited Winter (Father of the Triangle Offense) to have practically taught him the game of basketball. Lazenby pulled no punches, as he led into things by essentially declaring Phil Jackson as the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers…again.
