Spaying and Neutering Your Pet--Advantages and Disadvantages

    in Pets

With the epidemic of homeless animals wandering neighborhood streets, hungry and in poor heath (not to mention, the overflow of animals in shelters), one can easily see why spaying or neutering your pet would be a positive step to take.  But many people are still hesitant to bring their pets in for the procedures.  In this episode, we will take a closer look at what exactly is involved in spaying or neutering.  What are the advantages (other than cutting down on strays and unwanted animals)?  Are there any disadvantages?  Join us Saturday, February 28th as we explore this important topic.

The Pet Place Radio Show Orig. Airdate 2-21-2015 KJAZZ 88.1 FM

    in Pets

Today, we’re going to touch on the topic of saying goodbye to beloved pets who have passed on.  We cover this topic periodically because as much as we hope our pets will live forever, they are only with us for a short time and this can be very difficult, emotionally.  There are a whole lot of people out there who don’t understand how difficult pet loss is, and will even try and make people feel bad for feeling bad about grieving over the death of a pet.  Well, to counter that whole mindset, we’ve invited Melody Jamali from Beautiful Life Urns to the program today.  She has some great ideas for celebrating the lives of our four-legged family members who pass on.  Then after our halftime break, Kim Sturla, the executive director and founder Animal Place will be checking in to discuss the very ironic practice of shelters and rescues having animals on the menus of their fundraisers!  It’s a topic that is definitely worth talking about.

What Twins Can Teach Us About Genetics vs. Environment

    in Parents

How much of our children's basic temperament, their mental health, their intelligence, their learning disabilities, and all the things that make them who they are comes from their genes and how much from their environment. What can we learn about genetics vs. environment from the ongoing twin studies, including the study of twins separated at birth? Host Dawn Davenport, Executive Director of Creating a Family, the national infertility & adoption education and support organization, interviews three leading twin researchers: Dr. Matt McGue, Professor of Psychology at University of Minnesota, a behavioral and quantitative geneticist, Co-Director of Minnesota Twin Family Study and the Sibling Interaction and Behavior Study and Research on Adoption and adoptive dad; and Dr. Nancy Segal, Professor of Psychology, Director of the Twin Studies Center at California State University, Fullerton and author of Indivisible by Two: Lives of Extraordinary Twins and Entwined Lives: Twins and What They Tell Us About Human Behavior.

Pet Radio-The Heartfelt Work of Seizure Alert Dogs for Children

    in Pets

We have a special in depth show this week where we take a close look at the role of seizure alert service dogs.

Magnolia Paws for Compassion highlights the remarkable impact service dogs can have on people living with a variety of medical conditions, but most specifically, those who suffer from epilepsy.

To raise awareness of the widespread benefits of animal assistance, Magnolia Paws for Compassion has enlisted the help of Brandon McMillan, celebrity animal behaviorist and host of the Emmy-nominated television series Lucky Dog. Brandon has teamed up with Eisai, the Epilepsy Foundation and 4 Paws for Ability, a non-profit organization focused on the training and placement of service dogs for children.

Next we will speak with Karen Shirk, 4 Paws for Ability CEO, who trains and places seizure alert service dogs, and then Tom Penders, father of Becky, whoes family received a seizure assistance dog through Magnolia Paws for Compassion.

It is a fascinating and heart warming story to learn how these dogs are helping children and their families better cope and save lives.  You will hear first hand accounts of how these dogs are trained and the everlasting bond they have with their new family.

We are starting the Show with Julie Hall Karlock, the administrator for the Facebook group, Dog Euphoria and the winner of the Dog Euphoria Fashion Week contest, Trish Aleve.
