Console Wars-Sega vs Nintendo-NPR Book of the Year-Blake Harris

    in Books

Console Wars author Blake J Harris Live with Scott Cluthe

NPR: Best book of the Year !

Seth Rogen from the forward: "The "Console Wars" between Nintendo and Sega is what began a series of events that will lead to the end of humanity as we know it."  (well of course!)

Console Wars—a mesmerizing, behind-the-scenes business thriller that chronicles how Sega, a small, scrappy gaming company led by an unlikely visionary and a team of rebels, took on the juggernaut Nintendo and revolutionized the video game industry.

In 1990, Nintendo had a virtual monopoly on the video game industry. Sega, on the other hand, was just a faltering arcade company with big aspirations and even bigger personalities. But that would all change with the arrival of Tom Kalinske, a man who knew nothing about videogames and everything about fighting uphill battles. His unconventional tactics, combined with the blood, sweat and bold ideas of his renegade employees, transformed Sega and eventually led to a ruthless David-and-Goliath showdown with rival Nintendo.

The battle was vicious, relentless, and highly profitable, eventually sparking a global corporate war that would be fought on several fronts: from living rooms and schoolyards to boardrooms and Congress.

Based on over two hundred interviews with former Sega and Nintendo employees, Console Wars is the underdog tale of how Kalinske miraculously turned an industry punchline into a market leader.

Blake J. Harris is a writer and filmmaker based out of New York. He is currently codirecting the documentary based on this book, which is being produced by Scott Rudin, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg. He will also serve as an executive producer on Sony's feature-film adaptation of Console Wars.

Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) - 1126

    in Self Help

Tonight's special guest is Penny Booth-Johnson from St Croix Falls, Wisconsin, a survivor and activist who's joining us for the first time. Among other things, she's been involved in "Million March Against Child Abuse," a Nationwide effort to bring voices together in making an impact, being a voice for our children. Penny explains, "My memories go back as far as probably before I was 2, being picked up and thrown into canning jars. I have enough scars on my head and you could draw a road map across country on my scalp." She goes on, "My mother was the abuser. Everyone knew, but no one stood up. Years of her abuse had taken a toll on not only my body but my mind." For a number of years, Penny had been what she calls "a keyboard advocate" sharing very little of herself and hiding behind a computer screen. Recovering from a stroke and news of a brain tumor got her into action. "I knew I had to do something, and determined I was going to become an advocate that was no longer going to hide behind my screen. In September of 2013, I contacted "Million March Against Child Abuse" and became a Lead Coordinator for St. Croix Falls WI, and held my first Walk against Child Abuse April 5th 2014." She concludes, "I'm ready to tell my story. Yesterday I lived in shame of my scars. Today I soar past them to tell other peoples stories, to be a voice. I thank you for this opportunity, and I only pray that when I have the opportunity to tell MY story it will help others come forwards and erase the stigma of shame and we can continue to grow for our future generation."

    The Bully Effect

    in Family

Bill Ballenger, founder of Break the Grey in 2005, has dedicated his life to be a catalyst for
change in the lives of youth who live a “grey” existence in a culture of uncertainty, a culture that
fosters a “whatever” lifestyle that can destroy. Troubled and bullied as a child, Ballenger grew
into a violent teenager, and became a young married father addicted to drugs and alcohol. Local
burglaries prompted a SWAT team to raid his home where he and his wife were arrested.
Ultimately their nine-month-old daughter was taken from them and they were each sentenced to
six years in prison with the Indiana Department of Corrections. It was there that Bill’s life
changed. Two years into his sentence, Ballenger and his wife were inexplicably released from
prison and their daughter returned to them. With a passion for helping others, Ballenger shares
his story challenging students to avoid the choices he made and take their lives and futures
seriously. Break the Grey is the fulfillment of Ballenger’s vow to give something positive back
    to society.

    Laughter is the best Medicine

    in Business

Would we be nore productive if we laughed more? I dare say we would. Happiness psychology tells us we cannot be sad when we are smiling. Smiling creates a chemical reaction that makes us feel good. When we feel good, we access the best part of ourselves.

    Being Less

In today's fast paced communications era the smallest of actions can change a life within minutes.  How do we deal with the changing face of love? How do we open the hearts of the fearful? Maybe by sharing our stories and starting a dialogue that permits people to think about what one word, one sentence, one text message or one status update can do to change the life of another human being.  Could piecing together the digital moments of a couple's life over the course of a morning with only snippets of music, binaural stimulation, and silence allow you to walk, for 12 minutes, in someone else's shoes?  What would you do?  How would you respond?  Who would you become?

Vonyse established herself as a multimedia specialist producing comedy segments for the “New Faces” of Jamie Foxx's Laffapalooza Comedy festival, as well as being an integral contributor to brand development & marketing for the festival. She has also created online content and webpages for such brands as The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Poison, Radiohead, Diana Ross, Amy Grant and more.

In recent years Vonyse has become more involved with filmmaking. She composed the title track for the short film “Triple Minority” which Won Best Narrative International Lesbian Short Movie Award at the Annual LGBT Film Festival in Tel Aviv. She collaborated on a number of shorts, handling editing, music supervision and graphic animation. Vonyse is currently editing the feature film “Quiet As Kept”.

“Being Less” marks the debut of Vonyse's own body of film work. And is a semi-autobiographical look at finding love and becoming fully self expressed.
